Further to tele Paul's post, is anyone up for this?.
We could get a band together from board members and record a song then upload the files so everyone can have some mixing practice.
The less experienced guys will have access to well recorded tracks so they can practice mixing and also hear good quality "raw" tracks which can be quite an eye opener. The more experienced guys could do a mix too and explain what they have done with the tracks. It should be a great learning experience.

A cover song would be the best/quickest solution.
I can provide the studio for tracking. I have very good drums, amps, guitars etc. and could (but would prefer not to) play guitar.

If anyone is interested in participating state what song you would like to do (or one of your own) and what instrument you want to play or sing.

    Very nice idea.

hey michael.. i'd be up for doing some guitars (played lead with sack and a few other bands)

no idea what track though.. ill leave that to someone else to decide.

Great idea & a very generous offer Trackmix... in the past, I've considered asking if anybody would be willing to post a raw wav of drums tracked in a professional studio (so I could assess how big gap exists with my own humble :o home recordings).

Good suggestion too about playing a cover - just a bog standard one, no point in getting too hung up on a particular band... given that there's a mix of genres on the forum, maybe 1 x rock/pop track plus 1 x dance track might maximise the appeal?

If you're stuck for a drummer, I'll volunteer... I'm used to playing to a click, but I'm no pro by any means. There are other far better drummers (much better players than me for sure!) on the forum, so I'll not be offended if somebody else wants to jump in ;)

    Cool
Glad to see there is an interest in this.
I would be up for doing a straight band recording as I feel it would be most useful. A pop/rock track with or without keys would be good for me.
If other members want to do an electronic track go for it.
We have a few musicians already. We need a bass player, keyboardist, singer(s) and another guitarist and equally as important, we need the song.

my guitar chops aint what they used to be so i would suggest i play rhythm and let someone with more skill at the lead.

how does anyone feel about a kings of leon track off the new album. purely because its middle ground for us all and IMO the best sounding album of last year.. something to aim for!!! (also i think theres some piano in a few of their tracks which would be nice to get on tape.)

I'm sure I could scab a day off Joe for the use of his studio for a mix.

I might be even able to convince the talented Phil Hayes to polish it with his magic ears, if he's free.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,472 ✭✭✭Rockshamrover

    I'll make the tea:D

It would be great if this whole thing could be recorded on video and posted in the stickies. Would be great for those of us who can't get to the studio to see how it all gets done.

I might be up for some singing...depends on the cover that people decide on.

i have a song that you might like to do - it could be very lucrative for all concerned - 'where has all the money gone'

    http://my.liveireland.com/profile/tom78

i play guitar and sing and do a bit of tracking, mixing down etc

    tom

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 8,344 ✭✭✭fitz

Actually, I'd definitely be up for this, I reckon it'd be a bit of craic.
Something rocky would be cool...I'll have a think about it and come back with some song suggestions.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,472 ✭✭✭Rockshamrover

Is there anyway to collaborate online? As in the original song is on boards in all its constituent parts, bass drums guitars etc. I make a copy of each part into Logic or whatever DAW/recording unit you use.

We then mess around with the thing and send back our versions of the song for a no holds barred critique.

    Is this even technically possible?

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 8,344 ✭✭✭fitz

Yeah, but that's a different type of project I think...tracking being done seperately in different locations by different people and the whole coming together on here.
Certainly another way to go....but lets do it this way first.

If the multitrack from this session is going up for people to download and mix, I imagine we'll all be posting our mixes for critique anyway.

Yeah the bit about us all doing a mix sounds like a great way to learn something from this whole thing. That would be great.

well, unless the project calls for some field recordings - preferably of Australian animals and tropical sounds - then there won't be much I can offer by way of direct creativity. However when the time comes I'd love to be involved in some way - even if only to use 'The Force' to help everyone play faster, cos deep down *squints eyes and raises arm in sweeping motion* You Do Want This To Be A Death Metal Project

I think a Koala solo would be nice on the second verse ....

dude, now THAT would be awesome. a cover of "godflesh - anthem" or "bolt-thrower - cenotaph"

I did mic up some Magnetic Island Wallabies the last time I was over there.

If you go the death metal route I can make some Slipknot type masks for everyone.

(this is the sonic dilema I face every day, doing field recording based ambient electroncic music but deep down wishing I was 25 years younger and playing death metal)

I too think this would be a fun/educational experiment. I can offer my services as a piano/keys player if this is required.

Would also like to be involved, but alas I stuck down here in Kerry, if it was a whole day thing I could venture up, would be a great learning experience.
Was also thinking maybe the electronic guys could remix the track into a dance version of the track - if it was suitable, could be interesting.
    Oh and I play bass!

I propose a cover "Green Onions" by Booker T and the MGs; doesn't require vocals, planty of room for many guitars/bass parts and would possibly lend itself to a remix :D

Well, the aim is for everyone to get some benefit out of it by having common tracks to practice mixing and getting pointers on. Considering vocals are often the hardest thing to sit into a mix, it'd be a bit of a wasted excercise to do something totally instrument.
That's just my view on it though...

    Great stuff.
Looks like we have a band.
How about something cheesetastic like Nickelback "how you remind me".
Easy to play and lends itself to good mix practice as it is very open to reverbs delays etc.
My weekends are booked out for the foreseeable future so it would have to be a week day. Tuesdays are normally good for me.
Everyone who has stated an interest, does this suit?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,277 ✭✭✭DamagedTrax

tuesdays are perfect for me and i really dont mind what track we do. nickleback sounds like a good comprimise between everyones styles.

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 8,344 ✭✭✭fitz

It'd have to be Tuesday evening for me...
I'll have a listen to the nickelback track. Might be a better option by them..

typical vocalist.. saunter in after all the hardwork is done, bottle of whiskey in hand and claiming we should actually do a differant track :P:P:P

Yeah, I might be able to sort another day given a little notice...
As for changing the track...I wouldn't want to let down the stereotype! :D

so ok im in love it...

but what you want me to do!!!!!

even if you dont use me to record would love to mix the files as well

    Ok.
I propose Tuesday 10th March or any day tue-thurs 24-26th March.
Several people have said they want to do it so lets see if we can finalize who is playing what AND when they are available. Hopefully we can sort out a full band in the same place on the same day and get it done.
I have enough room for a couple of non players to sit in on the session too.
Really looking forward to both recording this and meeting a few more of the regulars here.

Just had a listen to the track.
Yeah, I can dig it. :)
There's a few tracks on that album that'd be cool...Woke Up This Morning is a good tune too.
Mick, I'll have a look at the dates and get back to you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,456 ✭✭✭ZV Yoda

Any of those dates are fine for me, but I can only do evenings (during the week). I can do week-end days or nights - just need a few days notice.

If any other drummers on the forum can make Tues 10 daytime instead , it's fine with me.

Trackmix... in case it turns out to be a nightmare getting everybody to agree on a specific date (and the hassle if any one person doesn't/can't make it at the last minute) do you think we all need to be there to track on the same day?... assuming we record to a click (and everybody knows their own sections), in theory, the various players & singer could drop in a mutually suitable times, say over a 2 week period? Just a thought. Understand if you would prefer to have the whole thing done in a day.

I would be willing to participate on a 6-stringed level, but would prefer something a little more rawkin'. My suggestions would be

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZrBDivsSe3k

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-0c4lgvpb4

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xXpL8XICJrc

All lend themselves to the more vocally challenged vocalist and are more about the right 'tude.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,731 ✭✭✭11811

Having thought about this, I'll gladly venture up outta the sticks up to big smoke any day! As long as there is one or two days notice! Any excuse not to go to college:D
Well I'd probably learn more doing this.
Yeah put me down for low-end duty if you like...

great tracks but we'll have a broad range of ages and styles involved so i think commercial modern rock is more suited to everyones tastes, dont ye think?

Agreed... really no point in getting hung up on a song/artist. This is an excercise in tracking/mixing - it's not about recording a favourite cover song.

I'm not a Nickelback fan (I just downloaded that song from iTunes last night), but that's irrelevant. I'd happily record "Bob the builder" just for the experience.

Anyway, since it Trackmix's idea/studio/time, he should have the final say.

I'm busy on the 10th, and looking at it, daytime during the week isn't gonna work for me I'm afraid. If a weekend or evening date comes up then I'm still well up for this, but if it has to be a weekday I'm afraid I'll have to bow out.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 377 ✭✭henessjon

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 8,344 ✭✭✭fitz

    Doesn't look like it's taking off...pity.
I think it'd come together a lot quicker if it was to happen as a one day weekend session, but of course that's primetime for any commercial studio...

If it was to take off again, The Hollow by A Perfect Circle would be a class number to do as an alternative to the Nickelback tune.
