Ending gym membership

I'm in westwood gym who will not take a cancellation of membership over the phone or by post. I've been a member for over 2 years. If I just tell my bank to end the direct debit, is there anyway they can come after me? has anyone done this before?

basically I have moved jobs so getting to the gym is a flippin nightmare. Going to one by work at the mo so there is no point in having 2 memberships.

SO they only take a cancellation in person? Bollocks.

Write them a letter telling them you are cancelling your subscription include a copy of a letter which you will send to your bank instructing them to cancel the direct debit. You'll need to get the direct debit reference number from the bank and include that in the DD cancellation.

You can just cancel a direct debit in online banking.

Simple letter to the gym stating you've moved out of the area or whatever, job done.

That would depend on which bank the OP is with. They don't all have that facility.

I rang the bank and they said they cant do it, and advised me that a fax to the gym should suffice. I have faxed and posted a letter. Pain in the buttox

Well they won't do it over the phone usually. If you get the DD reference number and write to them and instruct them to cancel it, they've no choice.

    Example from halifax's website.
How do I change a Direct Debit?
If you wish to change the details of your Direct Debit you must contact the bank or organisation to which the Direct Debit is paid. You may cancel a Direct Debit online by selecting the 'Cancel' button at the bottom of the View Direct Debits page. Please note that you must give us at least 5 business days notice if you want to cancel a Direct Debit, and you must also contact the originator of the Direct Debit (the organisation to whom the Direct Debit is being paid) to inform them that they will no longer be allowed withdraw funds from your account and ensure that the cancellation is complete.

    or from aib.ie
How do I cancel a Direct Debit?
You can cancel the Direct Debit instruction by writing to your bank in good time or alternatively you may contact us by telephone at 01 6685500.

i cancelled the direct debit before I told them. In saying that i sent the fax to the bank then straight after i sent the one to the gym cancelling it.

they tried to take money out of my account even after receiving the fax.
i got a debtors letter in the post that was the extent of it.
when i rang they said they received no such fax.

all in all id cancel the dd before tellin the gym

Westwood Clontarf forced me to send them a registered letter and also said they have a one month termination. I will know for next time and just force the bank to cancel the direct debit.
