Can anybody recommend any accurate fitness books on the market. I'm looking for books that would cover cardio workouts and weight training (dosn't have to be the same book) and a good guide to making programs.

Ideally, the more academic the better but easy-to-read simple book suggestions also appreciated. Does anybody know what material the colleges use for personal trainer courses?

So much out there, but don't want to buy rubbish.

Anita Bean also has a great book "The Complete Guide to Sports Nutrition" essential reading in my opinion

I picked up a lot from both of these (see what I did there :pac:):
    • The Encloypedia of Modern Bodybuilding - Arnold Schwarzenegger
    • Starting Strength (2nd edition) - Mark Rippetoe

I got a lot from the CrossFit Journal personally.

I'd second Starting Strength and I'd add in "Explosive Lifting for Sports". I heard Greg Everett's Olympic lifting book is better and more in depth but I've yet to read it. Colm has it, maybe he'll chime in on whether its any use.

spelt Rippetoe, incase people are searching.

I just ordered in the arnie book to my library, got a mike metzner HIT book too. You can check the library online, they get them into your nearest one for just 50cent from other libraries.

You can get 12 items at a time and renew them online, they have loads of new cds & dvd boxsets & classic films these days too, like sopranos etc.

My one is quiet so has the cds & dvds in their cases and it has free wireless, so I can bring in my laptop and rip listen to cds & dvds all day.

I work in Dublin City libraries and have ordered a couple of copies of Starting Strength. I'll check out the other titles mentioned here and see if I can order some of those too.

Rubadub, as well as ordering from other branches of your County library did you know you can go to borrowbooks.ie and search the catalogue of almost all public libraries in the Republic? You can have them sent to your local branch library and again it only costs 50 cent.

Excellent! I always wondered how books were decided on, I once wanted another book which is seen as "the bible" of another subject and it was not in the library. I asked if there was some way of recommending books and they said no, but took note of it, dunno if it ever did come in, I bought it soon after.

Thanks for that. The arnie book was online but due back in 1992! yet I was allowed reserve it. I emailed them and they phoned me and said they can get it from another library in the country and reserved it for me. Cheers for the link.

Thing is you get to browse in the library, and then sit and read the inlays, since they have wirless there it will pull in the song titles too and you can have then named how you want.

That is the only downside to the online service, you cannot just browse, there are loads of cds and dvds you would not expect them to have, e.g. family guy, simpsons and loads of the latest bands.
