Wireless antenna

Hi... I got a buffalo PCMCIA card for my laptop and a "14 DBi" external antenna with adapters and stuff. I plug it into the magnetic mount then to the pigtail adapter thing into the card. It picks up more networks and certainly improves range... however only in XP does the signal strength go to 1 bar, compared to just the card which gives full strength and internal wireless, which gives full strength also. Why is this? Its working at a decent speed and everything, just annoying to have to look at it. It's saying very low signal strength. Anyone help please? :(
