Does anyone know the course of action should an accountant working in practice decide that something was unethical or criminal and wanted to report these activites without jeopardising their job or revealing their identity?

I would gather as much evidence as possible first before deciding to do anything. As you really have to prove you are right. Then depending if you are quailfied or a trainee I would make a decision to either report it within or outside the firm.

I meant to add there are guidelines that all the respective professions have on professional standards. Members are usually bound to these standards. By whistle blowing you are probably just acting within these guidelines without even thinking about it.

Is the fraud been committed by the client or my someone in the practice.

If by a client, should be reported to the money laundering reporting officer in the company, all practices are meant to have one under the 2003 money laundering regulations act.
