Could be serious.....not everyone is from Dublin. Some of us don't know where the Red Cow or any cow is and don't really care.

What is in Dublin that you can't buy off the net with a credit card?;)

From the general opinions so far, on prices on their new site, "xmusic" is rivalling some of the big european on line stores.

    I doubt they could.

GAK are based in the UK where they have a significantly lower VAT rate than here in Ireland. Their prices excluding vat are prob very very compeitive. Someone with better knowledge of the actual rates will be able to do the figures to show a concrete comparison.

    Here are the rates...

    Ireland - New Rate 21.5% & Old Rate 21%
    UK - New Rate 15% & Old Rate 17.5%

So, you can see that there is a good difference between Ireland and the UK. 21.5% VAT compared to only 15% across the water. Even still I'm not sure if they will be able to match GAK on everything... but it's closer than it has been for years.

Why do Thomann charge the full Irish tax rate for us at 21.5% when the UK sites charge us the UK tax rate???

It's my understanding that the UK sites should be charging the Irish rate.

Alot of the things I have price checked on their site are a long way off the likes of gak and others.

On the subject of the VAT rates etc., shops with lower than a certain turnover aren't required to observe the VAT rate of the importing Member State. I can't precisely recall the threshold that was quoted to me by Revenue (plus it was several years ago when I registered for VAT) but it was a couple of hundred thousand euros as far as I remember.

People buying pro-audio gear. It's always worth checking around (I buy from DV247 on occasion), but Thomann are still cheaper most of the time.

Im not sure but I think there is a special condition within Ireland and the UK of free trade that does not apply to the rest of Europe and this is why UK sites can charge at 15% as opposed to the rest of europe which charge 21.5%.

There was a news article today on RTE about this talking about the actual potential loss you are making by buying in the uk in that it is sending Irish money abroad to the Uk and thus costing the Irish econmy. I havent slept in about 32 hours though so I cant recall for sure.

Sort of - they're required to register for VAT if the amount of goods they export to that country exceed the threshold. Thomann are VAT registered in all these countries and GAK aren't. If they don't exceed the threshold they just charge whatever the rate of VAT is in their country of residence. I think the limits somewhere about €100,000?

I was at X-Music today and got a fantastic deal on a Gretsch drum kit... The price was even cheaper than Thomann, in fact over €100 cheaper. Gretsch Catalina Club Mod Black Widow is €650 on Thomann and it is €519 in X-Music!

I've just recently moved to Dublin and still don't know my way around too well. However, I know the red cow roundabout as I usually drive from the N7/M7 and go southbound on the M50 from the red cow to my house.

The site isn't too descriptive of how to get there, so can anyone describe to me how exactly I find it if coming from, say, the Dun Laoghaire side? I'm asking here as I know that 1 wrong turn could send me up to 20 minutes in the wrong direction. Which exit will I aim for, and roughly where do I go from there?

M50 northbound, take the Ballymount exit, turn right over the M50, left at the first roundabout, straight through the second roundabout, take the first right (at the Harley Davidson shop) and you'll see X-Music on your right after a few metres.

    Pics or it didn't happen.

So, when buying in from the UK, you don't get stuck with the extra taxing-at-yer-doorstep like you would from the US or somewhere?
