Buying a car - what to wrangle out of the deal?

    Hi,

I am about to buy a second hand car, small budget (4K) and was wondering what kind of concessions I should be asking dealers for in the current market?

For example, say a car is listed at 4K, should I expect to get a cash discount for this car, given the price has probably already dropped in the current market...also given that the car is probably going to be 2001/2002 should I steer clear from the car if mileage cant be "proven" - i.e. I know you cant prove mileage but a well spaced and consistent service history will normally be sufficient.

Could I also ask for a guarantee of some kind? Say 6 months?

    thanks.

Look for cars advertised at €5-5.5k. That's what your budget will get you.
Get a 6 month warranty and full tank of fuel.
Look for a verified service history and NCT (and mileage, as you say).
Don't worry so much about getting the max in concessions, work on the pricing of the deal itself and make sure your deal stacks up well against other cars advertised.

Same as above, but id say you'll be hard pushing for the 6 months warranty. Push for it, but id only expect to get a 3 month warranty.

Check the boots on the car, and if it could do with a new pair try get that. Check when the timing belt was last changed, might be near due a change. If it is, see if they can do it for you as part of the deal.

Warranty is pretty much useless with most dealers on older cars, if the gear box goes they are probably not going to fix it, so I wouldnt worry about getting.Get a good mechanic to give it an extensive check and get them to service her, new tyres if they are crap and so on.You can get a good at a dealer if you know what you are looking for ( cause they wont give it you ), so bring someone that is good

    What are you buying anyway?

Might be a bit over budget but will haggle with the dealer a bit.....

    I hate stupid posts....

OP as said, look at cars for 4.5-5k and try working them down to 4. With something forsale for 5.5k I can't imagine you'd get 1500 off, but it could be worth the try. I'd imagine you wouldn't get much more than 3 months on a 01/02, engine and gearbox warrenty isn't worth much anyways. Get your full tank of fuel, and nct as well.

That was the OP Gary, lol!

They'd be quite a negotiator to win that one though... :D
