Depressed in Trinity

    To give you some idea of just exactly how depressed I am, here is my schedule for tomorrow

    10: Anatomy
    11: Pharmacology
    12: Lunch
    1: Kill self
    2: Study/read depending on mood

    Any advice?

    Postgrads got an email yesterday from the Student Counseling Services entitled:


    "Do you experience depression?"
    Dear Student,

    The Student Counselling Service would like to invite you to participate in a research trial aimed at assessing the effectiveness of online treatments for depression.

    Depression is defined as experiencing low mood most of the day with diminished interest in activities, feelings of worthlessness and self reproach may also be present. It may be accompanied by poor concentration, decreased appetite, sleep disturbance, and tiredness that has been present for 2 weeks or more.

    Two online treatments are available, e-mail counselling for depression and self-directed software for depression [beating the blues]. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of the two available treatments.

    The treatment program will involve screening and will require a commitment of 1 hour per week for 8 weeks.

    So basically they expect depressed people to come forward so they can be studied. I always thought with depression comes apathy. I guess they'll be waiting a while for volunteers.

    You've made a good start by talking about it, but this probably isn't the best place for you. A better resource would be your tutor, the senior tutor Myra O' Regan, or maybe the welfare officer, Orlaith Foley. If they can't do anything to help you, at least they can put you in touch with people who can.

    Don't feel that you have to share everything here, but if you can provide more information then maybe we can help you out, put you in touch with the right people etc.

    Also, undergrads got a similar e-mail about the depression study. I've gotta agree with T0mm, do they really think that they're gonna get much of a response to that?

    Hey, I can emphatise with u here. I'm in second yr(dreaded schol yr lol) but still finding it hard to settle into college. But the best decision I ever made was to seek help for depression. Theres so much amazing help COST FREE in the college. The counselling service is brilliant as well as the support group,tutor,peer supporters. The aware meetings are great too and are free but outside the college(5 min walk). Its scary taking these steps but you will feel so good taking them. They would love to help you. Good luck! :D

    The Student Counselling Service will also do traditional counselling in addition to that e-counselling (wtf?) mentioned above. If you do feel down, I also suggest visiting your GP or the college medical clinic. They are not just going to prescribe painkillers and tell you to go away, they will listen and offer whatever they feel you need (cognitive behavioural therapy is common and effective).

    The important thing to realise is that you're not alone, many students go through this and the college knows it (hence the services are provided). Talk to the experts, talk to your friends and family and don't just let it fester. If you feel you're struggling with classes, let your tutor know and maybe your course co-ordinator too.

    Well, people do seek out counselling and/or medical help - I suspect that for some, the online-ness of it would be more appealing than face-to-face support. People not coming forward with mental health issues is an ongoing problem. Definitely worth taking advantage of the facilities that are available in college, though, OP.

    I had depression (didnt recognise it at the time) as a student in TCD. I found the student medical support people were waaay more understanding then I expected. I went in feeling run down looking for a tonic and came away feeling a lot better about myself and with a genuine plan for improvement. Just talk to them, they really were good in my day.

    Know how you feel, pretty depressed myself lately. Don't know what you can do, I haven't been able to get over it myself either.
