Looking for the best daily driver option for a 180km daily drive. Petrol or Diesel. Must have a decent mpg (i.e. over 200 miles per tank.)

    R8 or 911

911C2S with the PDK should meet your requirements nicely.

money no option, daily driver.... 180km a day..
    I think I would take the CL65amg v12
its got speed and torque in bucket fulls, but yet has the comfort of a an s -class and all the toys you need in a car.....
I have driven a 2005 cl amg before and I will say it is a fantastic car to drive and would be a pleasure to drive every day.....

If money is no option, they why stop at the R8? Ferrari 599, Aston Martin DBS, Merc CL65, Ferrari califonia, RR Phantom.

Think the Op needs to clarify is it just a 911 or R8, or any car.

Also I think we would all like to know if this is a hypothetical question or an actual choice the Op is trying to make.

Either way you are looking for at least a 200mile tank range so 320kms, and a 180km daily drive - that means filling her up every second day. Even if money is no object, thats a pain (altho maybe a small price to pay for the pleasure of the motor you are driving)

Of the 2 my choice would be the R8

    R8 or 911

911's get extremely uncomfortable over time.

R8 is good but will litterally drink the juice out of your pocket ( you can see the needle move when you put the foot down !! )

    why not get a hamman M5 or Rs4/6 ??

True... 911's are very comfortable when you buy them, but before too long the interior will have worn away and you'll be left sitting on a nail while driving it.
The R8 is savage thirsty, with that 4.2 twin turbo engine. You should get a lovely economical RS4 with a very economical 4.2 twin turbo engine! It's heavier than the R8, uses the same engine, but because it looks more economical, it is! The RS6 is even better again. Twin turbo V10 engine, goes on the whiff of petrol!!

Veyron has no boot and can empty its tank in 9mins (on a runway I admit), not really an everyday car to be fair.

Clarkson said it was supremly comfortable however.

I'm too old for an out-and-out sports car as a daily driver. The Maser is brisk and gorgeous, but it's also comfy, fits 4 adults and it's easy to drive.

Actually it takes 12 minutes to empty the tank, and that's doing 253mph, so after the 12 minutes you're 50 miles down the road. Think about it for a minute... how many super cars could be driven flat out for 50 miles and NOT empty their fuel tank? You can be sure not many!

I defer to your greater knowledge :D still has no boot tho, so not an everyday car, simple as.

Not sure about the boot fact alright, does it not have some cubby hole up front? Still though, I rarely use my boot, so use the Veyron as an everyday car and the old diesel estate on the weekends that you go somewhere! Problem solved!

I like what you did there, the whole taking his post and turning to utter satire and ridicule. :D

I have a problem with the whole money no object lark because I have a particular fondness for the E46 m3, which can be picked up quite cheap.

I'd probably try get my value out of the "money no option" lark and pick something crazy-expensive! Maybe a top-end brand new Porsche or something, I really don't know... I don't really dream that high in the clouds! :(

    E90 M3 Saloon or an E60 M5

Neither will bring a tear to your trousers in the looks dept. but they have every other conceivable box ticked. From what I hear, the RS4/6 Audis are none too comfortable and the R8 is only comfy by supercar standards (though I would like a chance of some of that suffering).

what nonsense. As a previous 911 owner, and currently 968's, having the same seats as 911, and with 148k on one, and 118k on the other, they are sublime seats. The insterstellar mileage hasn't manifested itself unduly in either....

    I mean, he said R8 or 911 - I don't see the letter M or the no's 4 or 6 anywhere in that criteria.........;)

Fwiw, I never found the 911 thirsty - no big deal to get about 26mpg out of it - a more modern, newer one, would be even better, esp on a long run. I'd imagine the R8 would be thirstier.

Oh, and OP - toughie.......mmmmm, from a practicality point of view the 911 is very, very hard to beat. But I do love the sound of the R8.

    im touching 6'4...

the only Nearly comfortable porshe ive ever been in is the " jeep " they manufacture...

the R8 would be prefferance as afte seeing 2 at a junction one stopped and let the other go...

now, how many avensis or golf drivers do you see who do that ??

As for the 911 being thirsty, they can be, i know a fella with a bog stanard 02 model and he gets 22, then a mate with a 00 turbo and gets roughly 16-17

which isnt Too bad concidering it is a fairly sporty car, refined turbo armchair...

and yes the r8 is thirstier but lets be honest...

who wouldn't be ragging it around all day, it sounds ( and judging by videos of it driving ) is just asking to be pushed to the limts, non stop, all day long...

    As for M badges...

they only remain on 316/518i models as with every m3/m5 owner... the aim is to disguise it, or if you dont have one, make one :pac:

Why would you take an R8 or 911 through torture like that? The depreciation hit and maintenance costs will be massive with mileage like that!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,037 ✭✭✭kuro_man

    Get a...
    MB 300SL Gullwing
    De Tomaso Pantera or Guara
    Ferrari Daytona
    AMG CLK63 Black
    Aston Martin DB5
    Ford GT40

Feck it, get all of them if "money no object" at least they will hold their value.

I don't believe someone with an unlimited supply of money would need a bunch of unqualified petrol-heads like us to recommend them a car; plenty of professional car consultants available in the UK.

I think one of us has the wrong end of the stick. I'm not sure the OP meant this as a two horse race. He asked a hypothetical question, if money was no object, what would you choose for a daily 180km drive within his economy criteria? He also allowed petrol or diesel. I know there's talk of a diesel R8 but I'm pretty sure Porsche never sold an oil-fired 911.

oh sorry wasnt trolling its a genuine (hypothetical) question. its for the lotto. See I plan to keep working once I win.

Being a petrol head I would like to be able to place my business at the far end of the M50 so I can really enjoy whatever car I choose.

I was thinking, having both the Toyota VX and the R8 would be the ultimate choice.

Many people have used the money no object rule here... but what about regular cars? not even new ones!... Doesn't anybody here feel that their current daily driver is the bees knees? I had a 92 626 for well over five years in the naughties, and I loved that car to bits... not looks... but overall durability and handling over our capitals' speed ramped obstacle courses!
