Discrete Cosine Transform

    I have to say that I am well and truly stumped :o

    Mathematics is usually one of my stronger points, but we recently encountered discrete cosine transform in a lecture. Been doing a bit of research on it, and can't get my head around it.

    Can anybody explain to me the basic principles of why this is used?? And how it works?? And what's the difference between discrete cosine transform and modified discrete cosine transform?? From what I could understand of them, I couldn't seem to see any difference.

    I don't need any indepth explanation as it's not examinable. Just the above will do. Just don't like when I don't understand something. Like, why cosine? I was told because cosine was more efficient for the audio and video etc etc - but why? I can't just accept that "it's more efficient"...is that a stupid question? Surely sine functions would suffice...
