Has anybody on here been up to Derek lately and had pickups wired? Could somebody reply here or pm me how much he charges for wiring each pickup these days?

I don't know the guy or anything but just ring him and ask if you have his number.

I hope I dont sound like a smart arse but getting Derek Nelson to wire up some pickups for you seems like contacting the Ferrari F1 team to change a tyre for you. Most of the music shops in town would do that for you- I know Goodwins and Music Maker do and I'm sure most of the others too.

Thats not supposed to come across like a swipe at you or Derek Nelson but it just seems like overkill for a pickup change. I'm sure the shops would have a quicker turn around time too (Mr Nelson being of such renown he is constantly very busy).

What pickups are they? and what control configuration?

thanks everyone for your help. Music maker and Goodwins don't do it anymore as far as i know. There used to be a nice guy who worked in Goodwins a couple years back that done work and was cheap for me but he has since left. I will let you all know how much it costs when i get the work done. That guy up in the guitar repair shop in south circular road who used to work in musician is a waste of time. stay well clear of him. I left a bass up to him to get some work done and he told me he could do the work. Then he called me to say he couldn't so i went to pick up my bass and he charged me €20 for just looking at it. So no never again will i go to that guy i will just stick to Derek Nelson.

Ask an electrician to do it? Or anyone who's half decent at soldering? Like boycey said, you'll pay a premium for the service, which really has nothing to do with guitars, that and you'll have to wait for it, a week or more at a guess! It's just basic basic electronics.

I totally agree with you that its not a big job to do. It's a pity there's not more competition for Derek Nelson as it would lower prices overall. He does have a monopoly as there's nobody else who comes close to his skills. But i'd rather pay once and get it done right and have peace of mind.

Wiring in a new pickup is quite literally one of the most basic pieces of work that anyone with soldering skills could do. Absolutely no luthier skills required. If you want somewhere maybe a bit cheaper try Guitarfix on Exchequer Street.

Musician Inc (now X-Music) did setups and pickup installs. I think Eugene McLoughlin is now looking after that side of things at their Red Cow superstore. www.thegutiarworkshop.net

Then there's the GuitarFix fella and someone said Goodwins and Music Maker changes pick ups.

I think AladdinAmps said to me once that he'd do electrics on guitars.
