    Hi,

I want to buy a Gibson LP, where is the best place to look/buy?

    1. Internet?
    2. Shop?, where in Ireland? Good deals?

Don't buy a Gibson without trying it first, Quaility can be inconsistant, although I havent tried any the new standards or the traditionals yet.

Having said that I love my Les paul:D

make sure you try it before you buy because the quality is up and down with the les pauls....x-music on the red cow have a few lovely standards at the moment...if i was you id try get a 09 standard as they come with chrome grovers, the lock in jack imput and strap locks! its the little touches! waltons will have a load of les pauls in both shops so it might be worth your while goin in there cause you could try a good few before you make your choice! just be careful cause there can be some real rough ones out there!

    Cheers guys.

Unfortunately I dont have too much experience with electric guitars todate. Have been with my acoustic since I started playing and only had an affair with an epiphone for about two months.

What should I be looking out for in the quality stakes? How do I detemine "rough" LPs from good ones?

    Thanks again!

Do you know anyone who would know, perhaps you could bring them with you?

Where are you based perhaps someone on here could help you, I doubt your close to where I am but would certainly help if you are.

    Did you find it ok.

I don't know if they sell them anymore actually.

I had read all the reviews and all the Harmony Central threads about Gibson's crap quality control. I took a bit of a gamble I suppose (it was approx €2000). I've scoured the guitar for faults and I can't find any, there's a (crap) picture in the sticky thread.

2006 was supposed to be a bad year for gibson quaility yet the one I use is from 2006 at 2 grand I presume you bought it new, do you still have it?

Mine was made around November 2005 which is the info I got from a serial number dating site. I do indeed still have it :)
The price of Gibsons has come down since Rosetti was replaced/sacked . I think Xmusic are selling Standards cheaper than 2K. But then , I can't remember if a standard is the one with chambers or not.

btw, I'm not sure if dolphinmusic still sell Gibsons.

All post 1999 Gibson USA standards (ie not Custom Shop) are chambered / weight relieved. I think... Anyway I have a 1999 Standard and an LP295. The later is chambered but has a Bigsby so it's just as heavy. I had the pleasure of playing a 2004 LP Standard last week and it was lovely but very very light compared to my guitars. It sounded good but a little insubstantial in my hands but I suppose I'm just used to the heavier bodies.

The main thing when buying an LP in my opinion is to decide on a 50's or 60's neck. I have one of each and prefer the 50's neck but some people hate them and love the thinner 60's profile.

I think the quality control is sorted now so try here and buy from Thomann or GAK or someone. Usually much cheaper although X-Music seem to be on the ball with prices too....

(I think the Les Paul Standards made in either 2006 or 2007 were chambered and then last year they released the "Traditional" which just has the swiss cheese)

I did not know that. Thanks Alan - thought they were the same thing tbh.

    Give me the wood!!!!

    Ahem...

The reasons for the chambering are as many as they are varied. There is/was speculation that it's so they can get away with using inferior wood (negated I suppose since they now do the Traditional, are these more expensive?).
Others say it's because people were whinging about how heavy they are without the chambering.

There's plenty o threads on Harmony Central and the Les Paul forum about it.

If you dont mind the idea of a 60's neck profile then the Classic Antique series are up there with the pre 2008 standards IMO.
I have'nt played the revised 2008 model yet but if you really wanted a brand new standard thats the one i'd go for- the plek set up alone would justify it. The Traditional series seems like a corny idea to me- basically a rehash of what they've been doing the last 20 odd years?

Lastly, ignore all the above and buy a nice Bacchus or higher end Tokai if the brand name aint a big thing. Seriously good guitars. Actually add a used Orville by Gibson to that list too.

I would love to try one of these myself, but i won't buy one until I have tried at least 1 other, enough people on boards have raved about the quailty etc, but i still want to try one first. I nearly bought a bacchus strat last year but chickened out because I coulden't find one to try:o

If there's one brand I wouldn't have a concern about buying sight-unseen it would be Bacchus. Having played other people's Bacchus' at the meet-ups I'm even more sure of it than I was when I only had them myself.

Just a note, i was enquiring online about bacchus guitars and they have had a serious price hike. T-standards are now 2.5k, as per japanvintageguitars, although its not reflected on the site yet. they say its to deal with the worsening economy but i think its a bad idea. i was seriously considering a T-standard if it was anywhere near the price of an fender american tele, but now that its double the price, i dont think so!

anyway, moral is if you see one on ebay you like, get it NOW.

Japanvintageguitars were outrageously overpriced to start off with, plus they're based in Australia, so they have to buy and ship them from Japan to start off with... plus that's Aussie dollars.

    A t-standard is $1040US.

    http://www.japanguitars.co.uk/Page%202%20Orville%20By%20Gibson.html

I have an Orville by Gibson LPR which originally came from these guys and it is one of the best Les Pauls I have played. There are guys in the states who go for Orville by Gibsons over custom shop reissues.

Gibson seem to kind of have it together again in terms of QC, but the difference between new Les Pauls, all ostensibly the same, is still quite significant. Very different weights, and some very different sounding.

What's the difference between the Bacchus Les Paul models? I've seen some go new for almost the same as a Les Paul (albeit limited editions) but then there's the like of this one on u-box for a mere 318 before shipping and import:

    They're p90s. Only cheaper Gibsons have p100s.
