NTL 'boosting' the signal

What do NTL mean when they say they are 'boosting the signal'?

Our EPG never works. So the only way of seeing what's on is to use the 'browse' function, flicking from channel to channel.

That is, unless we call NTL. When I have to call NTL about something, it starts working. NTL tech support say this is because as a default measure to all technical inquiries, they 'boost' the signal.

The EPG will then work for the rest of the day. But next morning, back to the crap.

I've also noticed the picture quality getting progressively worse. NTL give the same story every time. No faults on line and signal strength is fine.

Why the change when the signal is boosted then?
