    HI,

A thin pink line just appeared down the monitor of my intel imac at the weekend. I have seen reference to this on another Mac site but was wondering if anyone on here ever encountered the problem.

It's just out of warranty, but I was wondering if Mac might still repair it if it seems to be a fault of the machine. Anyone know?

    Thanks!

(I tried to attach a picture of the line but it's not visible in the little png shot I took of it!)

sounds like the monitor itself is faulty hence why when you take a screen grab, we cannot see anything.

apple will take it back, but will they do it for free? i wouldn't bet on it.

    Hi Jim10000

If you use Command+Shift+3,you'll be able to take a picture of the screen.

Its the hardware thats giving the error, so you wont see it with software screen grab.

If its close to being over warranty then Apple might repair for you for free. Give them a buzz.

Where did you buy your iMac from? The manufacturer's warranty may be expired but the retailer is still legally obliged to repair faulty items within a "reasonable" time. So take the mac back to the retailer. If you bought it from the Applestore, then be sure you tell Apple support this when you call them.

I bought the mac directly online from apple. I was just wondering if anyone had an idea how much responsibility Apple would accept or if it's basically my tough luck because the warranty is finished.

I'll give them a buzz and see what happens....

    Thanks everyone for your advice.

    From citizensinformation.ie:
Under the EU Directive on certain aspects of the sale of consumer goods and associated guarantees (1999/44/EC), which was passed into law in January 2003 (S.I. 11 of 2003) in Ireland, all consumers purchasing goods have a right to a minimum guarantee of two years on products. The seller is liable to the consumer for any lack of conformity which exists when the goods are delivered to the consumer and which becomes apparent within the period of 2 years. The consumer is entitled to ask that the goods be repaired or replaced free of charge.

The law here is a bit murky but the above is basically true.

Thanks a lot for that Sad Professor. As it happens the 2 year thing wont apply to me because I paid for an extra 2 years Apple Care cover when my original 1 year warranty expires and it's that Apple Care that expired last month (d'oh!) so I think the iMac must be 3 and a bit years old.

As well as that I live in Switzerland so the EU law doesn't apply.

Thanks again though... your post gave me the idea that I should certainly look in to if there is any similar Swiss law,

    Cheers!

Oh, I thought you meant the standard manufacturer's warranty. In that case, I'm afraid Apple are unlikely to be much help. Not for free, anyway.
