When buying: Car Auctions V's Garages

I am in the market for a second hand car - have look at Merlin Auctions website - what are the other auction houses that look at the repo's?

But my main question is whether one should avoid these auctions as you have no real come back and stick to buying from a garage even though in the current climate I read in the papers that there are great bargains to be had at the auctions?

Has anyone attended any of these auctions - is there really good valve or is it just media talk?

    Thanks J

There are some bargains o be had at auctions - but it is a "buyer Beware" setup, so if you are not too good with cars, i might advise buying from a garage.

There will still be bargains to be had from a dealer, and at least you have some comeback in the event that something goes wrong.

Knowing what its worth is key. Problem at the moment is that most people in the auctions dont know what its worth and so are driving the relative prices up. Now this might still seem like a bargain to the general public but the final price paid in the auction is probably close to the straight sale price of the car in a dealer with warranty , service , valet etc. Never mind the price in the window at a dealer , if you ask him what he'll take for it out the door you'll be suprised. Its the same with the UK stuff. Sure its cheaper because you dont trade anything in , you get no warranty and you have no comeback. Approach an Irish dealer with the same attitude and watch the red carpet being rolled out. Dont be a sheep, if everybody is at the auction then it cant be that much of a bargain :)
