Just listening to the midnight news last night on Radio 1 when Late Date came on. I was just about to switch it off when a Luke Kelly song about a Swedish-American labour activist (didn't catch the song title) came on. After the song was finished the presenter who I have never heard off before called Lilian Smith dedicated the song to all the people who went on the march that day.

Is the presenter allowed to do this as it was a political event (I thought RTE had rules on these things) and did she over-step the mark. Whether you are pro or anti the march is beside the point, it could of been about any demonstration.

I can't imagine Pat Kenny or Ryan Tubridy dedicating a song to a group of demonstrators or marchers, can you? This would breech the RTE code, no?

It's about 11 minutes 18 seconds into the broadcast. A throwaway comment maybe, but rules are rules!

mmmmmm ya you do have a point,

i remember back in the time of the hunger strikes, any political/provocative music was discouraged

Don't mind Lillian, just fills in for Creedon now and again.

Part timer down in Cork as far as I know, probably fairly well heeled and well cosseted from the economic ill winds blowing through the land.

Like most of RTE, well above the average ind. wage, and like most smoked salmon socialists, well able to dish out encouragement from a position of strong sinecure.

Not a bad auld presenter though, nice and relaxed.

Agree with the Flutt, suited for that time, relaxed and chilled. With that said, she may have crossed the boundary rope with a comment like that. A definite slip.
