    Hi all,

With lent on its way i've decided i'm going to get healthy and start running. At the moment I can run for about 10 mins before being out of breath.

Would it be madness to enter the bupa great ireland run, ive entered my details into the take to the streets training room and they say 12 to 16 weeks is needed.

also i have begun to run around rinville park in galway, anybody know the distance a lap of this gives. i have no idea how far i'm running really!

    Thanks!

No idea about the training schedule but for distance I use Google Earth or Google Maps to get a good idea. Only getting started myself so best of luck.

Not too late at all. It'll probably be difficult for you but you'd most likely be able to finish it.

    thanks,

just checked distances on google maps, maybe i'm just naive but 10k seems doable

think i'm going to enter, i doubt i'll be able to run it all but i guess alot of people walk parts of it too,

With the likes of the Great runs there are just so many people at them that you will probably not really be able to run until a bit after the start anyway as it will be so crowded which will stop you over doing it too fast at the start. Take it easy and there is no reason why you shouldn't be able to make it round though.

10K is MUCH further than a lot of people seem to think it is. Can be quite a tough distance. I've registered for it this year for the first time, think it's only two weeks after Connemara though so I'll be crawling it.

No it would be the best thing you could do, because in 2 weeks when the novelty of the new healthy regime goes and you start to get fed up, you might just give up as most people do. But if you have the race to aim for it may well motivate you to keep going.

And what's the worst that can happen? - you get tired in the race, so you stop and walk, then run some more, walk some more, but no matter what, you'll finish it, have a time and so then you can plan one 12-16weeks down the line, do your take to the streets programme and smash your PB.

Worst case scenario though, it's a 90minute walk, no?

brentm, take a look at some on the run walk programmes out there. THey are a great way to build your fitness. Many people give up when they have to stop running but if you walk for a while, you will be amazed that you can start to run again and it will build your distance very quickly and safely.

thanks hunnymonster, i did the first 2km walk and run and then ran the 2k back without stopping. i wanted to see how far i could run before i had to stop.
i dont know with just five weeks should i go for a training program or build up to run as long as i can?

    Hi Brentmeister
Worst case scenario.. you can't run it all so run some and walk some. Try doing 10k sometime over the next few weeks and time yourself and then maybe set out to beat that time at the Great Run.
You'll walk it easily in around 80 mins

Absolutely. I was going off topic a bit and thinking of people I work with deciding to do the Aware 10k back in December the friday before it was on. Oh how I laughed at them 2k in :pac:

thanks!, i walked and ran first 2k then could run 2k back, i was thinking myself it was a decent start but dont want to get overconfident, i'm not fit and haven't run much in a couple of years!

munster gal, thanks for the advice, i was reading your training log and found it interesting.

ps the sli na slainte route in rinville is great as you know exactly how far you have ran!

    How's the training going Brentmeister?
I've been pretty crap. Didn't do much last week and was sick over the weekend and today. Hopefully I'll get going again towards the end of the week. Only 4 weeks to go now
