How are you's?just a quick question about.17hmr ammo, what and which type of round would you recommend for foxes?I tried the rifle for the first time last week on rabbits using the federal v-shock which I was pleased with but then I tried the 20grain hornady xtp which was a disaster.I thought the heavier bullet would've had more killing power than the 17grain!what would you recommend and where can you get it?thanks in advance....

Stick with the 17 grainers and keep the shots under 100yds and you'll be ok

I bought hornady 20grain 2 weeks ago but have only tried them on cardboard yet. Found the 17grain fine for rabbits and foxes, anyone have any opinions on what I should expect from the 20grain on rabbits and foxes or if there is any real difference?

the 20 grainers are a bit unpredictable in 17hmr.

20gr will punch holes straight through rabbit's and not do much damage to the meat, perfect for foxes, but saying that I only use 17gr for everything i'm shooting, the 17gr will kill a fox with a chest shot from what iv'e done out to 120yrd's,if you shoot a rabbit in the chest with a 17gr pill it wont matter cause the best part of the meat is on the back.

I use 17 gr federal premium most of time for rabbits, always have some 20 grain Horandy in a spare mag just in case a fox does pop into range sub 100 yards.

Check out post 592 from last july which i took two fox cubs one chest shot with the 17 gr and head shot with the 20 gr. The 17 gr did produce quite a big exit wound for the size of the round.

Theses days I tend to only take foxes with my .223. The 17 Hmr will not always drop them in one shot even with correct shot placement sub 100 yards. A lad in our club shot one at about 80 yards right in the center of the chest and fox got up and made it about 300 yards away was found the next day in a ditch had to go with the dog to find it.

Thanks lads from this we can assume:
    20gr for foxes
    17gr for everything

Stick with 17gr ballistic tip as an all rounder

They were the first rounds I used when I got my 17 HMR and to be honest they did not shoot well. Groups were not the best. A guy in our club swares by them seen some of his groups as well and they are really good. My rifle just did not seem to like them, try as many brands as you can some will shoot better. Happy and safe shooting

I'm a long time hunter and .17 hmr is a very very cruel round for shooting a fox. What next air rifle?
