Doblo Multijet problem

This morning my doblo's engine started to race, then white smoke started coming out the back. Next thing the steering and brakes arent working. Luckily I was able to stop safely using the hand brake. The AA have taken it to the local fiat garage, who reckon its a turbo problem. Anyone with similar problems?

Sounds like the engine started to run on its crankcase oil. I'd count myself lucky if it only a turbo that you need to do.

Hard to tell really, if the engine didn't sieze then you might be ok but ultimately the mechanic will have to tell you. A similar thing happened to me and it was the engine that blew.

Thanks for the reply Ferris. I spoke to the main dealer mechanic today and he was cagey - has had a quick look, he says, but needs another day before he'll get back to me - surely if it way just the turbo, he would have said so! It wouldn't start again after the smoke business, now I'm worried. It is still in warranty, although I've heard stories of main dealers trying to stick some of the costs to the punter by various methods. How did yours fair in the end?

If it's still in warranty and has been properly serviced then you have nothing to worry about - just sit back and wait for them to fix it. By the way, only the assistance for the brakes & steering are engine-driven - the controls will still work without the engine, they'll just be a lot heavier.

Anan1 - I understand about the assistance issue with the steering and brakes, but as I was turning left when this happened, the wheel locked the way it does when you switch the ignition off, so, like I said, no steering.

That sounds highly dangerous - i'd be making a lot of noise at FIAT looking for an explanation as to why the steering locked up. How old is the Doblo?

06, owned it from new, tiny milage, etc. I like it when its functioning, as its not expensive to run and it carries my enormous family easily. I have found Fiat to be assholes to deal with and that's why I went legal advice on it. I'm very pissed off with it at the mo.
