No no it's not a hoax at all. Rather than the image being from one super duper megapixel camera the photograph is 'stiched' together from hundreds of photos taken from a normal digital camera like you or I would have.

Just to point out that even if you did have a 1474 megapixel camera you could not really take much better quality picture than you can with a good normal 10 megapixel camera.

The limiting factor is not the number of pixels but rather the size of the detectors and/or the software. You would essentially just be getting a larger picture size from a larger camera with the same quality.
