i dont think its giving anything away about the story, ive only seen to the end of season 3, but just in case

when Brother Mouzone is looking for Omar he sends Lamar into a gay bar night after night to find him. One of the nights Lamar is walking out and we see Rawls just sitting there with a drink in his hand! whats that about!? Is it ever referred to again?

It never comes up again and, to be honest, I don't think it would add anything to Rawls' character. It's a very Wire like thing to have something like that in the background and just leave it at that. All the pieces matter, remember.

He's gay, that's pretty much it. They don't make a big deal out of it just like they never made a big deal about Omar being gay. It was hilarious though when it happened. :P

It is just another example of homosexuality not being a primary character trait in the series. The Wire isn’t Will and Grace!

It was very funny, I had to rewind that bit to make sure it was him. Good point rovert, but it also says to me that in Baltimore, nobody cares what things are really like as long as they appear normal on the surface (naturally I mean through the eyes of The Wire characters of course, etc disclaimer). We see it with Daniels and his wife, and the way the bigwigs in the department live and die by "stats", etc.

It's not referred to again but we presume he's not openly gay at work. Would he have got to where he was in his career if people knew he was gay? Think about it.

It was mentioned in threads. Not as popular as the old favourite; "Snoop is a girl!?" ;)

In Season four when Landsman is questioning bubs, he turns to read the bathroom graffitti, and it says 'Rawls sucks c*ck'

There are other hints at it throughout, with Daniels in particular. He shoots him a longing look as he is leaving his office in season 3, and makes other such comments to him when he asks him to allow McNulty back on the detail.

I thought those comments related to Daniels own chequered early history in Baltimore PD and an implication that Rawls was implicated in those, not anything personal to Rawls.

I think those are separate; the ones I'm thinking of were in season 2 when Daniels asks Rawls to let McNulty back on the detail

It is possible to be both - a husband & father and what is referrred to within the spoiler tags below.
