I was just thinking about the end of season 1 where the others were coming to get walt. Why did they make the smoke that all the survivors could see and that roussou(spelling) was talking about?? Was it just from a fire or could it have been the smoke monster? something like when they leave the temple it's a sign and thats where the smoke originated from. basically i'm just wondering if it's been explained yet??

I don't think it has anything to do with Smokey. According to Rousseau it was a sign that the Others were coming. However, there was some suggestion (by Charlie) that Rousseau lit the pyre herself to establish a meeting with the Others and trade Aaron for Alex. Which was true but she denied lighting the smoke. She was still acting pretty crazy though and I wouldn't have put it past her. It was never made clear either way.

It's been theorised that the Real Henry Gale was behind the original pillar of smoke that Rousseau saw in 1988 (and we saw in 3x05).

Wasnt she standing beside the smoke pillar holding Aaron when Charlie and Sayid found her. I'm fairly sure that she lit it to get the others to make the above trade.

Yeah, that's what I think. Here's the dialogue from that scene:

CHARLIE: There never were any others. You started the fires yourself.
DANIELLE: No, I heard them whispering.
CHARLIE: You're a nut job. You heard nothing.
DANIELLE: I heard them say they were coming for the child. The Others said they were coming for the boy.

So it's sort of unclear. But given Rousseau's state of mind it makes sense that she mistakenly thought the original pillar of smoke in 1988 was the Others; then in 2004 she overhears them talking about "the boy", assumes they mean Aaron, lights the pyre, takes the baby and hopes the Others will show up so she can trade him for Alex. But the Others never show because they never had anything to do with the smoke and wanted Walt (not Aaron) anyway.

I think if the pillar of smoke was a "sign" used by the Others, as Rousseau suggested, we would have seen them use it since. It was probably just coincidence that it happened to be lit when Alex was kidnapped. In his note, Henry Gale said he was going to start a signal fire.

According to Lostpedia, there are a few problems with this theory though. Sayid points out that there are no footprints surrounding the beacon/pyre. Also it seems unlikely that Henry Gale could have built it. Furthermore, Gale's license indicates he was from 2003.
