Should I get a second opinion?

    Hi,

I noticed a bump on my gum recently. It was painless but it looked the same as a nasty spot on the skin, ripe for the popping. I squeezed it and puss came out, and I had a bad taste in my mouth immediately afterwards.

I thought this was odd so I googled it and thought I had was a periodontal adscess due to a root being infected or killed. There was no pain and my teeth look fine. I take good care of them and brush twice daily, floss nightly and rinse with mouthwash.

I decided to wait a few days and closely monitor it. About 3 days later I noticed a bump appear at the very top inside of the mouth. Just about where the inside Gum and outside Gums meet. Once again there was no pain, but this is deeper in and not "poppable". I immediately booked a dentist first thing the next day.

She examined my mouth and said I have the makings of gum disease but didnt elaborate more than saying it's not bad considering I smoke about 15 cigs a day. There is very minor decay, but stressed the very minor part. The Xrays didn't show anything up with my roots and when I asked her about the bump, she said it was probably a trapped gland or something.

The tooth I suspect to be the problem (as it is located below the spots) is the first molar on my top left, and it occasionally tingles. I wouldnt call it painful, but it's not very comfortable. I have now noticed that it feels out of place although its not loose. Just today I've began to feel some sort of pressure on the canine just beside it.

I had braces of all sorts for 4 years and the result is a smile I occasionally get compliments on. I'm a bit worried that something's not right and that I should get a second opinion. Am I being paranoid or should I get this checked out by a specialist?

To tell you the truth from the limited information I have from your post, your dentist could be spot on. However having a gum boil and pus in your mouth is never a good sign and will usually not resolve without some treatment.
Getting a second opinion is never a bad idea if it worries you. I think (again from the limited info) that a endodontist (root canal specialist) could be your man (or woman). Look in the golden pages for "practice limited to endodontics".

Thanks very much for your reply and advice, I'll book myself in for an endodontist as soon as I can..
