Ballyhale v Portumna

Can't believe there is no thread on this yet especially as we have had a thread on some obscure intermediate club game
Match of the year so far and if it lives up to it's billing will remain that way for the rest of the year. Really looking forward to it and might even travel to Thurles where they are expecting the biggest club crowd ever for a semi-final. Bookies have Ballyhale as favourites, this shows the lack of respect for the reigning champions who I would love to see winning. Gonna be a cracker.

shamrocks win.. not gonnna be a walkover, but seriously.. henry sheflin, cha fitz, tj reid, colin fennelly to name a few.. the first three were big scorers in the all ireland.. will be up to canning no doubt if therre to pull the upset....... course it wont be a major upset if they do, cause this one is far too close to be puttin your house on!.. will be a crackr

Portumna take this easily. At club level Kilkenny are not the be all and end all. Portumna with a bit to spare.

First 15's for both teams anyone?

Mind if I use this topic for the De La Salle vs Cushendall match while we're at it? DLS will be heavy favourites but the last time a Waterford team reached an AI Semi final (Mount Soin in 2003) they got destroyed by another Antrim club, so anythings possible.

Can't see Mullane and co letting this one slip though.

Oh right I forgot Kilkenny sucked at club level, yeah cause ballyhale have never won an all ireland before.. and ballyhale are the only team in kilkennny sure they have won it every year for the last half century.. oh wait no! thats portumna.. (give or take).. try find the competitiveness of a kilkenny championship anywhere else in the country.. also, ballyhale = 5 'current' Kilkenny senior hurlers alone

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 15,238 ✭✭✭✭Diabhal Beag

Galway are destined to have at least one club in an All-Ireland final on Paddy's Day. Portumna will win by a small margin of 3 points.

Competitiveness? You seem to be forgetting Ballyhale steamrolled everyone in Kilkenny this year.

Last year the Shamrocks lost the Leinster final but they were missing their top players - no Henry Shefflin or Cha Fitzpatrick.

It should be a good game, hopefully the Shamrocks win....

Great start for Portumna. Cynical just there from Shamrocks keeper

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,908 ✭✭✭Daysha

Portumna are all over them. 2-3 to a point. DLS winning 1-1 to 0-1.

Ballyhale strike back! 2-3 to 1-1

Deise - would u mind putting any more DLS scores in spoiler tags please? I want to watch the DLS game after this one is over and would prefer not to know the score. I'm sure others are the same

Went for a quick shower before the game started, got back and it was 2-3 to 1-2 for Portumna.:(

    Who got the goals?

Didn't see who got Portumnas 1st, but Joe Canning scored a penalty for the 2nd and Shefflin got the goal for Ballyhalle

Kevin Hayes and Canning for Portumna. Missed the scorer of the Ballyhale one

 Joe Canning is on absolute fire! 3-6 to 1-6

    DLS score
    1-4 to 0-6

Portumna are a lot sharper all over the field. Both Shefflin and Cha seem very sluggish.

Looking like a good bet. Most expected DLS to walk it, but it's seriously close at the moment

Sitting here in McDonald's, keep up the good work with the score updates!

Game over now. Portumna have just been immense. 5-9 to 1-8. Still 20 mins to go.
DLS in serious trouble. Losing 1-10 to 1-07

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,908 ✭✭✭Daysha

Portumna 5-11 1-15 Ballyhale (2 mins to go)
Cushendall 1-13 1-11 DLS (2 mins to go)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,908 ✭✭✭Daysha

Unbelievable! They've got to do it all again, 1-13 each. Great comeback by the DLS at the end, 3 points down with only a few mins to go.

How do ya feel now Little Shyte? Tough break!

OMG, they're playing extra time? I presumed they'd go straight to a replay.

I'm gonna log off now and just watch the extra time on TG4 when it comes up without knowing the score.

Where is this DLS game on?

Mullane doing his best to get in his own players way for the DLS goal as well...

Congrats and well done to Portumna.

I can't see them getting beat.....

    Parnell Park.

Woohoo! Great match, and what a performance by Brian Phelan. That sideline cut in injury time was magnificant.

That said, I don't hold much hope for the club up against Portumna. They'll give it a right go, but not many teams would be able to keep with with the Galway club if they perform like that again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,460 ✭✭✭Orizio

No indeed, I can see Portumna beating them by 10+.

I feel for Cushendall, would be nice to see such a small club from Antrim get to the final.

You did see it actually, back in 2003 when Dunloy reached the final. They put up a good fight, but effectively got their arses handed to them by Newtownshandrum.

Like any other team that would come up against Porumna or Galway, you've got to look at Joe Canning and just say "ohhh shíte!" :D

Didn't do them much good today in fairness.

Incredibly proud of the home club, to have the level of hunger they had today even after all they'd won is incredible. Granted they were lucky with a couple of the goals but at the same time you make your own luck and overall I think they had more desire, believe and determination to win the match. They hurl as a team not just for themselves. I can't begin to describe how immensely proud I am.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 941 ✭✭✭CyberDave

Galways county championship is not as competitive with Portumna around. They are way ahead of the rest. With Ballyhale doing the same in Kilkenny. I thought this match would be a lot closer. I think however, we could be watching one of the all time great club teams in Portumna. Better than any of the great club teams (Kiltormer, Sarsfields, Athenry) that came out of Galway in the last 20 years anyway. I was at the game yesterday. They made great players like Shefflin and Cha look ordinary. People are now saying Joe Canning has never had a real test from a class full-back like Noel Hickey yet. On yesterdays form, I think he would pass the test. Now if we could just clone him 14 times. Galway might have a chance.

I wonder how many points from a sideline cut Joe Canning and Brian Phelan will get between them in the final? :)

I was away on holidays for Galways championship matches last year so this was the first time I really got to see Canning play (apart from the odd pieces of highlights etc) and from the looks of it, the kid has really got it all.

Had to lol when he missed that relatively easy free in the first half. The look of shock on his and the supporters faces! :D

Obviously you know nothing about the history of Portumna hurling. Half a century of dominance? They only won their first county title in 2003 and have contested the final every year since. They only became a senior club in 1992 and an intermediate club in 1982. I hate begrudgers like you who can't accept that a team deserves to get out of hurling what they put into it! You don't see any cynical remarks about Ballyhale coming from Galway/Portumna people!

I have to say I wrote that comment on a complete impulse very rashly with no concern for its historical correctness!... I was simply sparked on by an incinuation that Kilkenny club scene was poor.. which I find insulting, not as a Ballyhale supporter but as an intermediate hurler.. if the teams in senior in kilkenny are no great shakes, then that comment incinuates that my team, are pretty poor! I apologise for any offence, I have certainly been quoted a number of times and to be honest I have no idea how to delete comments once they are made so:D..

Im actually a big fan of portmna and the cannings, and hayeses.. very exciting energetic hurlers! And I was more or less chearing them on, although im dissapoionted things went so bad for ballyhale, cause it represents them and kilkenny poorly.. as ollie canning said after the match, they were expectiing a tough game, but when the goals went in it killed them, and no matter who you are, when you concede 5 goals your gonna have to do something pretty amazing to win!...

my first time seing ballyhale in action since county final.. portumna as ollie said training hard since christmas, were razor sharp, and well worth there well earned victory.. the shamrock lads on the other hand, looked like their legs were made of stout and lager... very sluggish!! they made a stab at a comeback but at this level there is no substitute for hard work and dedication, and portumna clearly put in that little bit more to get them well over the line!!

    That enough of an apology!??;)

if they can keep it up, they will definitely be among the greatest club teams!. Amazing for a club so recently junior and intermediate!

Surprisingly comfortable margin for Portumna, they have to be strong favourites for the final. Both Ollie and Joe Canning were crucial. In the hype over Joe, it shouldn't be forgotten that it was actually Ollie who (rightly IMO) got the Laoch na hImeartha award.

Joe Canning is brilliant! He is such a bonus to have on your team. Not trying to be rude in anyway, but i was over the moon to see Ballyhale get beaten. Like many in this country im sick and tired of Kilkenny winning. Was delighted for the Galway lads.

Portumna are defending champions btw  And secondly it is not KK's fault they are so far ahead of everyone else and a KK team in full flow is something to be admired and looked on in awe IMO

I don't think Portumnas win guarantees success for the Galway or indeed Kilkennys downfall. We in Galway know this better than most others. Think of the great club teams that have come out of Galway in the last 20 years, Kiltormer, Sarfields and Athenry as well as underage, yet we are still waiting for the Liam since 1988. Portumna are a class apart alright, but this win doesn't mean Kilkenny are not still contenders for 4-in-a-row.

If anything Cyber it will hinder Galways chances of success its a pattern that has occured in many counties, firstly the club becomes so successfull that the players place more value and effort into their club than they do the county and secondly the rest of the clubs in the county become resentfull.

Just speaking from a Tipp point of view I can think of the two most successfull club teams in the history of the county and they would have contributed very little to the county's fortunes in the coincideing periods of their dominance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 941 ✭✭✭CyberDave

You have a point alright. There is a healthy club rivalry n Galway. I love seeing Portumnas success but my club spends most of it's time in intermediate so we are generally don't compete with them. I don't know how the likes of Athenry / Clarinbridge / Gort feel about Portumnas success. I know Loughrea are probably not too happy about it. Ballyhale have won their fair share of titles in Kilkenny but it isn't hindering the county teams success. If the county team is good enough, the club rivalry s**t that goes on doesn't bother them.

Portumna are a class act. No harm to DLS, but I suspect Portumna will walk the final. Phelans sideline equaliser for DLS was amazing though. Point of the year?

    Without question.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 260 ✭✭portumna

The reason portumna are so good is because they stuck togethr over the years. Fom the starting line-up last Sunday, 8 of the players played minor together in 98 (B champions) and 99(A champions) with another 3 from those teams on the bench! Add to that the talents of Ollie and Joe Canning, Niall Hayes, Eugene McEntee, Martin Dolphin, Gareth Heagney and Michael Ryan who are all decent hurlers.

In 5 years when most of these players are gone then Portumna will be a team in transition and they will be lucky to get to a county final never mind win an All-Ireland. So as they say we should make hat while the sun shines!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,706 ✭✭✭premierstone

Yeah I've heard from someone in the know that the current squad is far and away above anything else in the club and that there wouldnt be anywhere near that coming through.

Oh yeah and where did ye get Micháel Ryan from ;)
