Injury taper and connemarathon

Hi all , training for connemaraton and managed to pick an achilles niggle where i have been told to lay off all running for a week.
As regards training to date , i have managed to get in a fair amount of long runs at marathon pace or close to Marathon pace (4 *22, 1*18) and my interval and tempo runs were going well, so i dont think i would have added much in the next week or so (last real hard week of training per my schedule) . What sort of taper if i get back training should i do considering its a full week lay off ? (essentially this is a taper week so should i extend another long run for the next week). I would like to get one more long run in before hand. I know i will probably lose some fitness but i have been reading up on it and it seems you dont lose anyhting from the first 5 days off but after then it starts to drop . Is there any other type of training i could do to keep the fitness topped up ?? I will go out on the bike and swim i suppose

    Thanks

It sounds as if you have plenty of miles in your legs and so missing a week isn't too tragic. If you are able to run normally next week (i.e. three weeks out from the race) I would be inclined to do a couple of shorter tempo runs and maybe the last long run that you feel you need. Then a two-week taper ought to suffice.

Is there anytype of cross training that could be substitiuted for a week off or running without obviously the strains of running on hard surfaces ?

hopefully it will clear up in the week, have always been prone to overtraining

I suppose if I were in your position I'd take the opportunity to do a bit of gym work - rowing, a few weights, maybe a core stability routine. Stuff that I never have time to do but which can only bring running benefits.

Swimming? I suppose, if you enjoy it - I don't. Cycling - maybe I wouldn't risk your achilles hammering that too much.
