No spare key with used car

I've searched and can't find much info on this, I'm hoping to get some advice.

I bought a car a few days ago, its only a couple of years old.
After everything was signed and we exchanged keys he only gave me one key,
I asked him for the spare and he said he didn't know if he had one, said he would look around and would get back to me.
I haven't herd back from him yet but going by his body language I don't think he has a spare.

I'm a bit annoyed, I thought it was assumed that there would be a spare key handed over?
I know I gave him 2 keys with my trade in.

I'd like to hear what other people think about this as I plan to ring him about it and I'd like to know if I should force the issue or if I should just accept it.

The car has remote central locking so I dont expect a replacement key to be cheap.

I just feel a bit ripped off.

Is it a dealer or private seller?
Definitely get the key, what's to stop this person calling to your door and knicking your car....with the key!

Its a dealer, not a big garage type authorized dealership tho.

tbh I'm not too worried about someone turning up with the other key, the garage brought the car in from the UK.

In fairness you're hardly going to get a previous owner come back for the car and if they do, thats what insurance is for. The price will vary depending on the model of the car.

Yes there are lots of cars out there but a single key wouldn't deter me from buying the car I want. Maybe ask the dealer to code you a new key as part of the deal. BTW you won't need a second key fob unless it's alarmed. A standard key will get you in and disarm the immobiliser.

And your insurance company won't care if you're missing a key. People lose keys all the time.

I think you were unwise to accept only 1 key.

I hope the person with the 2nd key doesn't know where you live. You should fit extra security to the car.

Perhaps, but its done now :o

Like i said, the car came from the UK so I think im pretty safe in that respect :)

Its not so much the security I'm worried about, I just want to know if I'm within my rights to demand (politely :) ) a second key.

Ithink you should be getting a second key. If i sold a used car, i would provide one, and i would expect the customer to look for one. A new remote key is going to cost upwards of €200. What happens if you lose the only key you have?

From what you typed the seller did not sell or promise you a spare key. After you did the deal you asked about a spare and now you are thinking of pushing the issue!
There is no issue to push. A spare key is a bonus unless you include it in the deal before you close.

From a security point of view it is possible on most cars to deactivate any missing keys.

ya i'm in the same boat. just after buying a used car two days ago and he just told me there wasn't a spare one and i thought that all cars came with a spare which is annoying because i'm going to have to pay for a new one. Because if anything happens to the current one i'm screwed
i said to him that it was strange but he insisted that when they bought the car it only came with one key....

Thats a fair point of view.
out of curiosity, do you ask if a spare key is included before you buy a car?

In general though whats to stop someone having a third or fourth copy of the key even if you have the original and spare?
