hey guys i was wondering, my deadlifts have started to go comfortably beyond the 80 kilo mark and i was wondering if anyone knew, hmm, the kind of grey area where its unsafe to go higher in weight without a belt?, is it to do with your overall body shape and strength, or is it like after 100 kilos i should be really using one?

I've seen 360+kg pulled without a belt, so it's not like there's any set range you HAVE to wear them.

The key is just to build up slowly, do your core work, do your back work and let your erectors get used to the heavier loads.

I went thru a period some years ago dedicated to beltless deadlift training. Missed 190kg badly (it moved an inch or two tho I could easily pull it with a belt) and 6 weeks later pulled it for 6-8 singles with loads left in the tank and still without a belt.

They might have to worry if you're pulling like a pissed off cat (http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Garden/7645/halloween/archedcat.gif)

Like I said, make sure your form's right and you'll be fine.

Do You Need Weight Belts? If you don’t feel like reading the whole pdf, here are some of the key points of Stuart McGill’s research.

    * If you never injured your back, wearing a belt adds no safety.
    * If you injure yourself while wearing a belt, the injury is more severe.
    * To get the most out of weight belts, you must lift with bad technique.

    * If you want to lift a few more pounds, wear a weight belt.
    WTF?
