Limerick Man's Car Review Thread

I've been a car fan since birth pretty much, when local kids were off kicking a piece of inflated leather 'round a field I was busy constructing roads in my sand box where I could tool along in my Matchbox rides. It gained momentum from there, if it didn't have a carburetor, I didn't wanna know! Got my first bike when I was nine years old, 'twas a Honda XL 125 and I could barely touch the ground with my tippy-toes when sitting on it. One of the hardest lessons I ever learned was my first real jump on that bike: I took off over a modest little bump, dropping the clutch before I lifted and screaming the bike a whole three feet in the air! I was like Superman for about 0.5 of a second with my body at a horizontal degree while the bike aired. Wasn't so file.php?icon=rofl.gif when she landed and I slammed my nads into the tank!

Later that summer the folks took me off to Santa Ponsa or some other Spanish resort that was then for the well healed but is now a den of iniquity for the 18 - 30 dance and drug induced scene that I am now only partially out of! Anyhow, back on topic, on this very visit to sunny Spain I was lucky enough to come across a Burgundy Mustang Fastback, much like Kyle's Mach1 in the Muscle Car Club I am in now, but not nearly half as sweet! That was it, right then that second, I was hooked on the American Muscle Car!

Over the years I've dabbled in many makes and models of high performance cars to include Jap and German marques. But my goal was always American. One of the best examples of cars I've owned for fun was an '89 Toyota Supra MkII 3.0 Twin Turbo which was both a seriously high performance and luxuriously equipped car in its day. No traction control or stability control or any of that jazz, just sheer raw power! As good as a car that it is, it was nothing compared to the enjoyment that can be found in American Muscle. I will never forget my first experience sitting behind the wheel of American V8 Muscle: Nostalgic, Loud, Presence Beyond Belief, To Cool For School! It was like a dream come true!

And guess what? It just got better! The first drive I had was in a '67 Mustang that was old and tired and needed lots of tightening up yet it exillerated me like nothing I had experienced before! Only weeks later I bought a '79 Pontiac Firebird Transam - My first American Muscle Car! And guess what? It was even better! The car had been completely rebuilt by Mark Malone in Kildare, probably the most experienced Muscle Car enthusiast in Ireland, who now has his own workshop producing the Irish version of 'Wrecks To Riches USA'! Upgrades include brake, suspension and gearbox mods so she can now handle similar to a modern car while giving the thrill of classic American Muscle! On top of that she is a really tight car that can easily tool along doin' 80 on the motorway, and I ain't talking kmph here!

The car is a 'Smokey And The Bandit' tribute, albeit a '79 model. She's running the 403cui Oldsmoblie engine which is reportedly better then the Pontiac engine of the day. From the factory she was putting out 185hp and 310ft/lbs of torque, figures of which I'm sure has been beaten since Mark rebuilt and tuned her. She's a real pleasure to drive, loads of thrills and sideways action like you can only imagine as a boy! Puts a smile on my face every time I get behind the wheel! I'll show you a few pictures so you can get an idea, but there's only one way to really experience the thrill of a car like this - do I really need to tell you how?

There's not enough interest for a classic dealer to specialise in american cars only. There's plenty of them tipping around mind you! If you're looking for something in particular lettuce know and I'll have a look-see for ya. ;)

Lovely car. Looks like a 79, are you getting cheap tax?

I was hoping to bring in an 06 saleen Mustang but the VRT is TWICE the price of the car and shipping. Have you seen the 77 charger around Celbridge?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 193 ✭✭Fugs!!

    Nice!!

Did you know General motors copied the style for the Manta B. AFAIK.

Yep, she's a '79 alright! Thought I mentioned that in the 'review' but even if ya missed that it's on the reg too! The Saleen or Roush 'Stangs are nice machines but tax insurance and VRT are pretty nasty. That's the beauty of the 30+ models - €50 VRT, €50 Tax and a coupla hundred quid for insurance. Carefull importing from outside the EU though coz ya gotta pay VAT also!

A '77 Charger!?! Are you sure? Coz it looks like this ya know!:

Fantastic car. Im a huge fan of the American Muscle Cars. Id love to get one, but my concern would be with the cost of repair/maintenance.

Surely is dude! There's a few other yanks located in the vacinity - namely a red GT350 tribute and a black Chevelle.

Repair and Maintenance is actually quite cheap. Big uncomplicated engines and parts are easily found. PM if you need any help with what you're looking for. Relatively cheap past time for the return you get out of it.

One of the fold must live near me - I've seen (well heard mostly) those cars pass outside my door loads of times. The growl is amazing!

Please post a video with car sounds.

Have you been to any of the meets in Kilbeggan.

Car in Celbridge has Vinyl cream roof and car is black, usually around the hatch.

Depends on the condition, you can pick something ropey up for €5k that you would have to put a lot of money and work into or you can buy something rebuilt from anything between €12 - €40k here depending on the condition and desireability of the car. Very rare models have sold for many hundreds of thousands of dollars in the US.

When you add the youtube link, only add the bit after the = sign.
