Fuel efficiency?

Been trying to find out the fuel consumption of an Alfa Romeo 156 1.6L. Does anyone know where I can find it, or know what it is? I do big mileage and I don't want to cripple myself with petrol costs.

Driving slowly can prove frustrating as there is not much torque down low in the rev range, however plant your right foot and your smile just gets bigger and bigger. Fuel consumption is not bad, averaging around 10 l/100 km

    Source for above found here

Bear in mind you're actual fuel consumption varies depending on how your driving is eg city, motorway etc.
A test I do is fill her up to the gills and drive ~50-60km then go back and fill up. Note how many litres you've had to replace and and factor it in so 3 litres after 50km = 6L/100KM

Is that the thank you button? :D

It depends on your driving style and where you drive. I had a 1.8 and rarely got more than 30mpg because most of my driving was short trips or slightly spirited longer distance driving. That said, on a weekend of leasurely driving around the dingle peninsula, I averaged close on 40 mpg.

    You mean this button? ;)

Thanks for that. What I'm looking at is a little bigger, and sure, speeds and road quality affect the consumption, but it gives me a rough estimate at least. :) That model's better than my Cordoba anyway.

Oooh, nice one Fizzman, the very one. Thanks.

Thanks for that alias - glad to hear from someone driving something similar.

I think fizman is more so on the money there. If you want economy i heard the avensis is good but I stand to be corrected on that

    *edit*
    beat me to it!

:o If I was as good about economy as I would like to think I'd go diesel too - problem is I love this car. Need to justify it to myself (and the hubby) though so it needs to be an improvement on the pocket. :)

    Had a 04 156 1.6 and used to do about 500 miles a week, best I got was about 34-36 mpg...Lowest was about 28mpg..
Not forgetting the Cambelt change every 36K miles...

Checked oil twice a week and topped up as needed, they do like a bit oil...

My best advice if you are doing a lot of miles is to buy diesel..Find a good clean 156 16V 1.9 JTDm and take it for a drive...more power and 45-47 mpg..:)

On a car the size of the 156 the 1.8 litre petrol will probably be as economical as the 1.6 litre in reality as the 1.8 will have less stress carrying itself around than the 1.6.

My choice would be the 1.9 JTDM also though.
