In the past few years I've developed quite an interest in rugby but I've never played it except for a few messabouts when theres a rugby about. I'm really itchin to give it a go and I'm wonderin would I be able to pick it up and play competively eventually as I'm 19. Until recently I played gaelic and basketball, and I'm sure I could transfer some skills acquired there to rugby. I'm from Downpatrick in Down but also live in South Belfast, if anyone knows any clubs that would be the best for a complete beginner itd be great!

Fair play lad. John Hayes didn't start playing rugby till he was your age.

From my experience, smaller clubs seem to be more welcoming. Simply because there's less people so people remember you and make more of an effort whereas in a big club, you can have up to 70 / 80 down at training so people don't notice or make as much of an effort.

John Hayse, Kevin Maggs didn't start playing until the same age as you and both played for Ireland so good luck.

Go down to any of the clubs in Belfast and I'm sure you'll be welcome, if you played basketball you're probably suited best to second row so give it a go.

Lisburn, Larne and Coleraine all have super underage set-ups - Ballymena have a good U-20 side so perhaps might have a good squad you could train and develop with.
    enjoy it!

I didn't start playing till I was nearly 21, nearly 23 now and really settled in. Love the sport! Some of the lads I play with are nearly 40 so I've got a lot of rugby left in me!!

Doesn't matter what club you go to, they all have j1/j2 teams even if they're a senior team. The first few months will be tough I guess unless you know somebody on the team, it'll be worth getting stuck in though!
