I am due to be means tested for Jobseekers Assistance over the next few weeks. I know this may have been asked in other threads but how do they calculate if you are entitled to the full ammount. Say if a person had savings of 30,000, does this effect the outcome. Is a certain ammount of savings exempt? Is your home exempt? Do they look for Bank Statements? Is it up to the honesty of the individual applying to say how much savings he has and to name all accounts, investments etc. Thanks in advance

To answer some of you questions.

    1) If you have 30.000 euro the first 20.000 is a dis-regard, the next 10.000 will mean you will lose 1 euro per thousand ie 10 euros
2)Your home is for personal use so therefore not counted as means, investment properties ase however assessed as capital.
3)Yes they will look for Bank statements usually going back 6months prior to your claim and right up to date.
4)It is in your best interest to be totally honest with the dept re-various accounts etc,if they find any sign of deliberate concealment it will affect your claim.

    Hope this helps.

where did you get this 20k figure from?. what legislation sets these figures out?. Iam planning to apply for the back to education allowance for next september but am worried coz saved a little bit in order to emigrate but decided against it.

    could this affect my claim?

In case it is relevant, if you are say you are co-habiting with a partner and not married, they will only take tour partners income as means and more than you will be entiltled to very little if anything, just a word of caution:)

So... hold on, does this mean that while i saved by uninterruptedly working hard and buyin in discount and charity shops and going around by foot...people who were earning much more than me but spending till the last dime...and who are now subletting their apts and getting SW and Rent allowance while walking in their Prada's boots...I, will not get help because i have been dumb enough to deprivate myself to the point of being ill for the last 10 years?
