Bit of a rant here, but sure anyway....

I've noticed what seems to be an increasing habit of people flicking lit fag buts out of their vehicles. On the M50 this morning I witnessed three seperate cases of this. I think this is downright dangerous and says something about the kind of person who does this kind of thing. Get's my goat up

even nicer when you're a motorcyclist and said flicked butts land on your lap

Try riding a motorbike behind these people with your visor up. The game of dodge the butt may sound fun but its not.

Just to make you feel a little bit better OP, these "Fag Flickers" do get what they deserve sometimes.......

A few years ago I was driving a truck on the M25 around London (at night) and the truck in front of me was loaded with 3 massive rolls of paper for some sort of industrial printing.

I saw the driver flick his fag butt out of the window but it blew in between 2 of the paper rolls. I didn't really think much of it at the time until a few miles down the road he started indicating right so I pulled into the 2nd lane thinking we were about to overtake a slower truck.

Alas it was not an indicator I saw but a fire in between the roll of paper  I flashed my lights and beeped my horn and got the other driver to pull over, we both had small fire extinguishers in our cabs but within just a couple of mins the he had to disconnect his tractor unit because the whole trailer was ablaze.

Very scary at the time but I did have a little grin to myself later as it was the planks own fault really.

I wouldn't have liked to have been in his shoes when he returned to see his boss to explain what happened. I doubt it took the fire crews long to establish the cause of the fire.

Do it during summer in Australia and you can cause major fires. A car has an ashtray for a reason.

It is littering. You can be fined for this if you're unfortunate enough to be caught. I always flash someone if I'm behind them.My reason for this goes back to an occurrence as a young fella where a butt came into our car from another car & burned me!

    Hmmm.....good point.

As a non-smoker I hadn't really thought about it but the ashtray in my 07 motor is removable (and has been by me) to provide a second cup holder.

Still no excuse, if you smoke, buy an ashtray for your car, simple. I know smokers that do this and think it is perfectly ok to do, beacuse when they are walking down a street smoking, they just flick the ash and stamp on the butt. Never tought about the dangerous side until the bikers mentioned it.

To the smokers who think it is ok to do this, what do you think of people spitting or chucking papers out the windows of cars?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,056 ✭✭✭maggy_thatcher

It's widely speculated that the Mont Blanc Tunnel fire was caused by somebody throwing a cigarette butt out the window, landing in the air intake of a truck. I know they say cigarettes kill, but this shows that littering kills too!

I was sitting in traffic a few years ago on the bike when the driver beside me flicked a lit butt into my lap. I threw it back through the open window of the car along with a few profanites. I've never seen someone move as quickly as when he was trying to find it in the car.

im a smoker myself and i think ist very rude if people to flick the fags out for the car, i only flick it when i see a yamaha r6 and i always aim for them lol. no its just not on really

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,785 ✭✭✭Farls

I see it most days also. What really annoys me is the smell you get in your vehicle if the person in the vehicle in front is smoking...I hope they go up to 20 euro a packet.

Someone caused outrage in Oz (around the time of the fires) when they said that they'll continue to flick the butts out the window, until ashtrays were made standard.

    So?
They don't have ashtrays so you have to put it somewhere so out the window is ok?
There's no bin in a car so if you eat something you can throw the wrapping out the window?
With food you can just put the wrapping down and wait til you're out of the car to put it in a bin. You can't exactly hold a cigarette until you get out of the car so just don't smoke one.

No, driving hard top but I like to have my window down slightly for fresh air, not stale smoke.

This leads to the point that its just as dangerous to smoke while driving as it is to use a mobile phone.

I have zero respect for fag flickers - I hate the cig smell as it gives me bad headache for hours, and twice on the M1 in last few months, someone flicked lit cig butt and it landed somewhere on my car such that my car stank of the cigarette for days!

Next time someone does that to me, I swear I will overtake them and will flick a brick or a open carton of milk or something thru the window..!

    / end of rant..!

I don't think I will really do any of that, but I really want to though..

I was riding home along Johns road heading to lucan, Fag C*nt car driver in front emptys ash tray out the window, cop car beside me, I stop cops who seen it happen and they said they couldn't stop him.

If mobiles are no banned, Smoking in cars should be banned too

if theres nobody behind me ill let the ash flick out of the car, but never the butt, i smoke it to the end and keep the butt in my car

Couldn't or wouldn't? I think its disgusting, its littering and dangerous too. I think a lot of smokers have a messed up mind set they think its ok to throw a butt away, weather they are driving or not, but they wouldn't do it with the wrapping or any other form of litter.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,694 ✭✭✭✭L-M

Go on everyone attack me lol

I used to do this, until Karma kicked me in the arse. Off i went, flicked it out the window, closed my window. Then i smelt and felt burning, hah, thing came back in and landed on my neck lol. But ya, between that and burning a hole in my perfectly holeless carpet, i stopped smoking in the car for about 4 months.

I also remember spending ages cleaning my car, going out for a spin (and smoking a cig), flicking the ash only (not the butt) out the window. Came back to see the side of the car drapped in ash.

Pain in the neck this smoking thing. (pun intended :P)

Have to admit (and I know I'm gonna be slated for this!) that I'm a flicker. I never use the ashtray in the car, in fact my car doesn't have one (optional extra on some BMW's and I'm not the first owner). Must stress though that I NEVER, EVER litter any other substances / wrappers / bottles etc. I know that doesn't make it ok, in fact I know it's wrong and (maybe) dangerous but it's the only thing I do litter. No necessity to attack me now because I have already accepted and admitted the error of my ways! I reckon many smokers do the same, i.e: limit their littering to cigg butts!

Most cars have the ashtray located on the dashboard/console to the left of the driver.
Most smokers smoke with their right hand.
The window is located on the drivers right.
See where I'm going with this?

I've always found the above a right pain, flicking the cigarette meant having
to worry about taking my eyes off the road and looking down to see where
the ashtray was to my left and try not to hit against the ashtray hidden behind the gear stick.

My solution a cup holder ashtray mounted on the drivers right hand side
at steering wheel height. You can even get a cup holder that clips into the
air vents that will hold the cup ashtray.

    or the following two combined:
    http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.7290
    http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.13693

No I no longer need to use the window, the interior and exterior of the car are also ash free.

    True story!

I know a guy who flicked a fag but outta his car window. It immediatly blew back in & landed on a girl sitting in the back seat.
She handed it back to him. So he opened the car door to throw it out.
As he did so, his mate following behind, overtook him, taking his door CLEAN OFF!

The two most commonly found pieces of litter are chewing gum and cigarette butts. I don't smoke but i don't go around throwing my gum everywhere

Report them. Reg number, time, location. I reckon I've made 1000s yes 1000s for the coffers of South Dublin Co Co and Wicklow Co Co. You must be willing to go to court to give evidence. I've never been called and have checked a few times how particular cases went.

If it was known that the driver behind would probably report you it wouldn't happen as often.

So next time you see it jot down the info and ring your friendly litter warden.

Wasn't there a case where a judge threw out a case as the litter warden
didn't have the particular butt as evidence.

How do you know the people you reported were even contacted by the authorities?

i cant see even this goverment managing to ban smoking in cars!! would be great fun trying to have a sneaky one in MY OWN CAR on the way to work:)

Was walking to a bring centre with a crate of wine bottles. Guy flicked a butt out a window, it went down the back of my shirt, burnt me, and I dropped the crate.

He picked up all the pieces of glass and brought them to the bring centre himself allowing me to walk home.

I still have a red mark on me back...

    I second that!

OT here, but I was once standing outside a pub on a nice summers night enjoying a cigarette. I was at least 3m away from the door, the place has an outdoor seating area, and some dude asked me to move because he doesn't like cigarette smoke! It was outdoors for Christs sake!

I told him that since I had to leave the company of my friends to come out and have a smoke that if it really bothered him so much that I was out smoking in the open air that he could go back in to the smoke free pub and enjoy the atmosphere there!

Everyone's entitled to their opinion but don't make us feel like leppers!

I wonder has any of them ever watched the film Planes Trains and Automobiles. In this film, John Candy flicks a cigarette out the window, only for it to re-enter the car and smoulder on the back seat. The net result of this occurence is that the car eventually catches fire, burns to a near hulk and destroys most of their stuff.

    An Aesop?
