Use a stanley to lift up the edge and try to peel it off. You can use petrol or tar remover to take the adhesive off, just don't be smoking around it!

Use a heatgun or hair dryer to melt the glue and it should peel off.

You will probably have to scarape off any excess glue afterwards with some sort of scraper.

It was on the car before i bought it so im guessing its been there for years.
How good is petrol for taking off the adhesive? will it take it completly off?
i dont really want toscrape it off in case i end up damaging or scratching the windscreen, is it easy to melt it off or would i be better off asking someone in a garage to take it off?

HeatGun/Hairdryer (6 inch away) followed by white spirits/tar remover to remove the residue.

You won't scratch the windscreen unless you're digging the edge of the blade into it - glass is the probably the easiest item to clean on a car, it's a lot hardier than you think.

Petrol/tar remover/white spirits are fine - try them and you'll find out!

Smash it and get a new one on insurance ( most policies cover w/s replacement ).
    Naughty ... but nice !:p
