Not a bad score at all. It kind of fell off my radar a bit after the poor Famitsu score but Famitsu haven't been the same in months and really get the scores wrong. I knew Level 5 wouldn't let me down. The only complaint seems to be the poor on-line but I had absolutely no interest in this anyway. Level 5: what squaresoft used to be. :D

Sorry I haven't read the review just yet but I thought this game was practically only with a single player mode tacked on?

From what I've read it's a single player experience with an average monster hunter type multiplayer tacked on. I just read the review instead of skimming over it and it's not the best written so I'm back to slightly not as excited.

So first you were happy because EG rates it and now you are worried becasue of the way the review is written?

    You sheep Retro!

I am glad to hear the single player is the main part.

Western RPGs can be so bland and soulless.

I'm really looking forward to this game since I've become such a big Level-5 fan. I really like the art style too which always helps me to get absorbed into the game's world and story. I wonder when it will be released here.

Judging by his/her review history I think you can trust their judgement of the game. e.g. The Last Remnant 6/10, Okami (Wii) 10/10.

Hmm, I do agree with their reviews. My problem with the review is they don't really say all that much about why the game is so good.

I think you'd agree with me that the combat system in an RPG can make or break the entire game. Seeing as this reviewer says that the combat system is really good (e.g. highly customisable, no grinding in the single player experience etc) isn't that saying a lot? I guess they don't talk about the story a lot and talk about the game world in passing. They do give a few hints though about the story (i.e. that it's somewhat light hearted and peppered with humour and transformation sequences) but half the review is spent talking about the gameplay. Maybe they focused more on that as it's an import review?

I don't mind the focus on a light hearted story really. All of Level 5's games have been light hearted with the exception of some scenes in Jeanne D'arc. I actually really like Level 5's story style. It's like a brilliant saturday morning cartoon with tonnes of humour and they usually have a nack of getting some superb voice actoring. Kind of worried about the battle system being described like FFXII although battle systems seem to be were Level 5 excel so hopefully they managed to make a real time battle system requiring lots of strategy and doesn't feel repetitive.

ALOT of people like the battle system in FF12. Many found it to be one of the redeeming features after a crap story. Also loved Hunts it has to be said.

Not saying I thought it was better than 10's, but it was sure nice being able to run past Random encounters instead of being drawn into a load screen every 5 seconds like we have been for years.

I was excited about this until i realized it was more like FF rather than Fable. If i hear enough raving about it i might rent it.

It wasn't nice sitting back doing nothing while the AI fought the enemies for you. I'd say it divided the player base right down the middle. I wanted FFXII to be a final fantasy game not a single player version of an MMO.

Maybe you overlevelled as you say many, but not you, did in FFX. I never felt comfortable using gambits against some of the tougher optional or even story bosses. If we are talking about insignificant opponents then I wonder how gambits differ to just pressing X repeatedly to kill crap enemies in a standard FF game-in fact in this situation FF12's battle system was better as you could just run past, or kill more quickly, the insignificant enemies.

I definitely didn't overlevel. I didn't spend any time levelling up and I know I didn't overlevel because the bosses were very challenging and took some strategy to beat. However while the bosses worked running around the field was monotonous. You would let the AI kill the enemies then when you were out of MP you would run around in circles getting MP back watching your guys slowly heal themselves. Not my idea of fun. Give me Grandia, FFX, Dragon Quest VIII, Lost Odyssey or any other turn based game that actually required strategy. As for the mashing X comment, that only worked in FFVII and FFVIII. The other games all required strategy or at least manipulation of jobs and skills.

Yeah but the AI actually took care of some of the monotony in random encounters and grinding. You just then have to focus in the harder boss fights and the story ones are usually easy. The optional ones are really just extra challenges and you can't always beat them with just gambit spams or leveling up. They actually require strategies similar to mmorpg bosses.

It sounds like you just don't like ff12 cause the combat is too different to a classic FF game or jrpg :P

They are indeed. I am so disappointed my second hand version of RG won't run on my PS2.

So when is the US release?

I heard it will be region locked for multiplayer so have to wait for reviews on importers. I don't think they said they're release EU yet.

I might import depending on EU release.
