Im planning to head to venice with my mother in june for a week. I was wondering if a week is too long to be in venice or is there loads to see and do. Are there any day trips to rome from venice or does anyone know of the best way to see both ect.

Also if anyone knows of any nice reasonably priced hotel in which to stay while in venice and things that have to be done ect. I would be very grateful. :D

    Thanks

    Lucky you!

It's a lovely place to visit. Going to be hot in June so be ready for the smell.

I spent two days just walking around getting lost there. There are lovely little shops everywhere. I found asking locals for advise on best places to see was worthwile. Italian men are very talkative :)

Never went to Rome from Venice but I'm sure it's easily organised.

I stayed in Jesolo for two weeks when my car broke down  so took a ferry to Venice which was like taking a bus, so don't know of any hotels there. Would gladly spend a month in Venice just to see everything.

Just google the list of hotels there and e-mail them all for details.

  • Cheers thanks,

Going in june as i work in a school and can only go when the school is closed. Hopefully the smell wont bother me too much, sure the liffy in the summer has to be as bad ha ha. :)

I never noticed the smell to be honest and I was there in July.

Absolute brilliant city, make sure you get lost in all the little back alleys (I know that might sound dodgy but it's not at all and you're never more than about 30ft from streets full of tourists), they're where you really get a feel for the city.

i was there in june 2 years ago and it was very hot, mid 30s and i didn't get a single whiff of a smell and yet i smell the liffey even on cold days :)

i don't think there is enough to occupy you for 7 days in venice, 2 days would be enough, 3 days plenty to see everything, its quite small in truth but you have to walk everywhere because cars etc are banned from the island.

verona (where Romeo+Juliet is set) is about 1 hour from venice by train so that could be an option, as are the The Dolomites http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dolomites

rome is about a 5-6 hr drive from venice or about a 4hr train journey costing approx 40-45euro

reasonably priced hotels on the main island are nearly impossible to find, expect to pay, much cheaper accommodation can be found off the island, we stayed in treviso about 30 minutes by train from venice

I would second what Rossie has said. I visited Venice whilst railing it around northern Italy. We got there at about 9am and left at about 4pm the following day and saw a lot of venice itself. If you are going for a week then the Lido would be the best option.

Also agree with Verona, probably our favourite part of that part of Italy. Sitting outside the Roman ampitheatre listening to an Opera on a warm evening was lovely.

    Hi there,

i went with my ex and 2 mates for 5 days and we found it a bit too long! 3 days is plenty of time to wander all the streets and alleys and soak up the atmosphere.

Would definatly recommend a trip to Verona....great place with lots to see and some good shopping!!

  • Thanks for all your replies. I am thinking now of maybe spending 3 days in venice and the rest in verona and just see other places by train. If it was just me going id go to a different place everyday but with the mother il have to have a pacific plan and hotels booked ha ha, she is scared of the unknown ha ha :D

Agree that three days would be enough in Venice and Verona would be a good place to visit...
Also, don't worry about smells, was also there in June last year and didn't notice any bad smells from the canals. I think the city put a lot of money into trying to reduce the smell a couple of years ago...

when i was there Oct'06 the place flooded really badly...even made the news over here!! we had to buy these plastic bag wellies you put on over your trousers and wade through it.....smelt a bit but was such a laugh!!

I went last summer in May. The heat is killer. Bring suncream and really comfy footwear(trust me). I went for 3 days and one day of that was spent in gardaland.
It's an amazing city.Love getting lost in it. Never noticed a smell. Make sure and visit st.mark's square at night. It's breathtaking.

3 days really was enought. We got the 6.30 train to rome. Slept the whole way and got to our hotel by 12.30. Not too bad ahd the trains are very very comfy. Amazing scenery on the way too. I would say if your going to italy, don't miss rome. Not so much the vatican as I thought that was overrated and expoited by money. But the collusuem is somethin else!!

Make your trip a day longer and go to rome. You won't regret it!
Again, comfy shoes. I swear I've never been in so much pain in my life!

How do you know about the scenery if you slept through the journey?

By the way I stayed here http://www.campiellogiustina.com/

It cost 90 euro a night for a double room, private bathroom including breakfast. It's a tiny bnb 5 minutes walk from saint marks. Didn't meet another person on my stay there. Perfectly clean and two mins away from the best pizza place in venice. you'll reconize it as it has a german shepherd asleep on the floor in it.

i found rooms very expensive in venice so this way perfect as just a base. only thing is the bnb is upper floor so you have to walk up two flights of stairs. maybe not sutiable for your mother. but def look into bnb's-much cheaper.

  • Thanks for all the comments, im really looking forward to going now that I hear that everyone liked it so much. Will definitly have to visit rome as id love to see the colluseam:confused: terrible at spelling ha ha.
