    Hi,
Just wondering what the best exercises are to tone the stomach in the gym? Would situps do? Sorry just new to all the gym stuff...

Actually, squats are better. Studies involving all sorts of electotherapy imaging show that when you do barbell squats at 80% of your maximum lift, you use your abs more than when you do crunches or sit-ups.

One of the big myths is that sit-ups are how to get a six pack. Actually, you already have one, it's just covered with fat. Bodybuilders have a saying "Abs are built in the kitchen, not the gym". A tight midsection is much more about losing bodyfat than specific exercises.

Abs are actually a fairly small muscle group. Working them won't burn many calories compared with squats or deadlifts.

A clean diet, enough cardio and some heavy lifting will help you get get the shape you want.

When it comes to specific exercises, sit-ups are not that good, they mostly work your hip flexors. Crunches, especially weighted crunches are better. Concentrate on bringing your ribs and hips closer together. Other good exercises are the roman chair, especially if you concentrate on finishing the movement by curling your hips off the pad. Best floor exercise is the bicycle crunch (right elbow to left knee....). Plank, side bridge and bird dog is also good.

Pilates classes help you tighten up your whole core area.

    agree with you EileenG

I would say Abs are 75% diet and 25% excerise on those Abs..

here good site shows you range of excerises for the abs with vidoes.

    http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/exercises.php?MainMuscle=Abdominals

Concentrate on the lower ab excerises like excerise ball pull in, flat bench lying leg raise and knee raises on parallal bar
