Idea kinda came about after the map one, the epic woodies and weapons threads [lol] and seeing the vehicle thread is still going...

basically: start listing stuff you would think is useful in an outbreak. don't limit it to what you think is essential, like weapons, generators, water purification tablets, etc. just list off things you passed by today and thought, "that might come in handy during an outbreak"; i.e. stuff you wouldn't think of normally.

i dunno, maybe i've been playing too much fallout 3. seems a bit of effort, but still, one thread of 'oh i passed a shop today and saw this, here's how it might be used in an outbreak',

example, a fire hose: they're fairly strong; you could cover a doorway in lengths of it and nail it into the door frame, might act as a temp barricade, or to reinforce one.

    what do you think?

Cigarettes. Yes I smoke, but they could also be used as a improvised fuse for molotovs and other lovely party favors post Z-Day

Woodsmans Axe would be very useful as both a close quarters weapon and tool for building, smashing etc.. Also woodsman's knife too. Preferably a stone for sharpening them too.

guitar strings! can seal of an area with ease, pulled tightly across a door frame, two or three could hold off an attack or slow them down anyway.

i second the smoke grenades, could buy you time in a tight situation, although the bastards could probably smell you!

So using a hatchet is not how a real survivalist would do it then?

chicken wire. where to get it though? a chicken wire shop?

so many uses. most of all tying up unruly survivors.

    what would MacGuyver do?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,850 ✭✭✭Cianos

A leatherman and a swiss army knife. They have a bunch of uses in everyday life, and I'd imagine even more in the height of an outbreak.

A few walkie talkies would be great, you can get ones now that have a range of miles. Great in this mobile phone dependent era... I think humans have lost the capability to pre-arrange appointments now.

"Kcccccch....Sorry, I'll be there in 10 minutes, I ehhh, got held up by some Z's. Kcccccch...over".

Think you can pick it up at most home-improvement centers or garden supply centers. MacGuyver would figure out how to make an impenetrable barrier out of chicken-wire and chewing gum.

My Z-Day shopping's already done, but what I don't have (which would be cool!) is a hidden safe room a la Arnie's one where he keeps his guns in the movie Commando. (I haven't seen the movie in about twenty years, but still remember that scene!).

Just going into a room like that would prep me for some Z-slaying!

That room was actually in an Army surplus store, but i do agree. The contents of that room would be everything you need to end the existence of every zombie you encountered.

Army knife and magnesium fire kit.
Esplosives : Home made (saltpetre + sugar will create smoke, if u fill a small container with it a use saletape over it will draw the attention of zombies and give u time to run. Or bought fireworks. Make petrol bombs.
Get your clothes ready: thick leather will work in the short term. Go to military shop to buy a soldier's gear.
(Vest, fill it with aluminium or something that's light and zombies cant bite through - remember, it is not likely to survive in tshirt!).

Big ass Van or something so I can raid the crap out of a supermarket.
All the while I have 2 other people raiding b&q and petrol stations filling up on petrol so if needs be we can evacuate again and again if needs be I hope not though

Question: How do you shop for money?

Nail clippers...can't fire a gun or fight properly with long nails, if using a knife you could accidentally chop off a finger.

One flash light + couple batteries + one dvd burner (preferably from a computer) + a soldering iron = all I need to make a laser beam capable of lighting fires, blinding people, etc.:D

Set of mechanics tools - no point in having a car that won't run.

I think I just found my mechanic XD
    come up to dublin :P
    I'll cover medic haha

Proper list... a torch... old school flaming rag on a stick... doubles as a weapon in many situations.

A truck carrying water on that cylindrical thing in stead of water (its air tight so the water wont go stagnant or taste funny.... less I dont clean it out properly first) :P

weapons wise, I've got my machetes and thai fighting swords, I'd hit a hunting shop though, they've gotta have a rifle lying about... even just air soft, I'm sure at point blank range it'd take care of thescrambling Z's, maybe replae the pellets with tiny ball bearings? could work *ponders*

then travel round gettin food for a few weeks till all the hoarding of the city dies down

return... hit my school or nolans... haven't decided, and chillax :)
