2 niggling problems with my 60GB PS3

Hey guys, I have two little issues with my PS3 and I cannot seem to iron them out. They aren't major issues but I would like to fix them if I can, espically the second problem:D

    1) Resolution Issue - I have a 32inch LG LCD which is capable of 1080i. It has no HDMI port so I bought an HDMI to DVI cable. I can run games at 1080i no problem. The problem I have is when I play a DVD Film the screen goes blank, = no picture displayed. I have to manually set the resolution to 720p each and every time I play a DVD. I have the setting at "automatic" but that does not help. Any idea's?

    2) Red Faction 2 - don’t laugh now, but I have a great fondness of Red Faction 2, I know it has its bugs but the multiplayer is great. My brothers and I often played for hours on the PS2. According to the official compatibility list, this game should be 100% playable. However, not for me it isint. The single player is grand, but when you want to play split screen, the graphics hang, disappear, and is unplayable. I have the latest firmware installed so that is not the issue. Any of ye play it on the PS3?

    Many Thanks,

As most PS3 games only do 720 I would have 1080i ticked off most of the time to be honest.

No idea why it would be blank though.

theres little difference between 720p and 1080i, so if 720p works just use that. On my samsung tv some resolutions cause the screen to go black but it comes back on if i change the channel to something else and change back or if i turn it off and on , try that maybe?

Thanks for the info, I tried to switch the channel and switch back, no joy, very strange indeed.

Anyone have a copy of Red Faction 2 and willing to give it a try on their PS3, thanks?

    James.

    Red Faction 2 is a PS2 game?

I am pretty sure not all of the PS2 games work on the 60GB, maybe thats simply one of the unlucky ones.

720p (believe it or not) is much better looking that 1080i. Play something at 720p for a while then switch over to 1080i and marvel at the annoying flicker in comparison. Set your ps3 to output 720p only, you'll be a happier chappy.

I was wondering about SSF2THD. It says it does 1080p or 720. I am surprised it doesnn't (or says it doesn't) do 1080i. If I only have a HD ready TV in this case what am I better off switching the res to?

    Thanks again for your help.

I know Red Faction 2 is a PS2 game, its just one of those games that I used to love to dust of and give it go every now and again for a bit of cheesy fun. Its says it is a 100% compatable which is annoying me.

I did a bit more resaerch on the blank screen and some people have actually de-selected the 720p video option and just leave the 1080i setting. I must give it a go and see does that work.

    a) if it displays 1080p (or indeed 720p) then why do you want/need it to display 1080i.

    b) LCD TVs are progressive scan by default anyway.

Sorry, does 1080i have absolutely no advantages over 720?

I mean the TV will upscale to 1080p if I want but I was told this will lead to poorer response times in games where this is a factor. I mean I downloaded the 720 and the 1080p versions of the FF trailer and was almost certain the latter looked better (on my HD ready TV).

Actually another question, what defines 720, 1080i and 1080p? For example my TV's max res is 1680 x 1050.

If your HDTV doesn't support 1080p, then you will be better off setting the ps3 to run at 720p all the time. 1080i runs at a higher res but at the expense of progressive scan. Take a look at the lettering on the cross media bar and you'll notice a jagged flicker to the lettering at 1080i which isn't there at 720p.

To be honest, for the most part its hardly noticeable.
