I was flicking through the channels at 11.35 last night, and on RTE 1 there was news and on RTE 2 there was .....news. Two different presenters, presumably 2 studios, 2 sets of camera crews.....same news stories. Is this normal and I've just missed it in the past?

Yep, this happens from time to time.
Actualy News on 2 on RTE TWO uses studio 3 so have a full crew. No camera operators though as the cameras are robotic. But they will have lighting, Sound, NCO's, Editor and director etc. The late news on RTE ONE uses a small studio that is manned by one, maybe two persons. 1 locked off camera, DIY sound and VT rolling.
I've always wondered why the same news happens at the same time. I think it has something to do with the fact that thew News on RTE ONE is headline while the News2 on RTE TWo has news and sport.

I always think it's funny when they announce when News on Two will be on at the end of the Nine O'Clock news, it's always a bizarre time - "News on Two will be on a twenty seven minutes past eleven"

not everyone has sky news or cnn and need to get their news quota for the day.

it used to puzzle me when I was a kid why the adults took the news so seriously and we had to be quiet and it was usually bad news too.

What's your point? I can understand the news being at an odd time following Sports or maybe a movie, but on a night of regular programming why have the news on at strange times?
