What salary am I worth?

    Hi folks,
Just wondering how I could find out my worth as an employee. Basically been working in the company about 5 years, left for a year to go travelling last year and when I came back they took me back without even an interview, im on a years contract but when thats finished they've basically told me that they'll offer me a permanent position, i just need to finish this contract as its cover for another persons leave. So I suppose from the feedback i've been given for the first 4 years I was here and the subsequent (nearly) year I know im a valuable employee, I know im good at my job and they wouldn't want to lose me. Also the company is not affected by the recession, if anything we're doing better this year than previous years. So anyway for the first 4 years i worked there i got a consistent increase of about 3/4% increase in salary. Then when i came back they gave me an increase of 20% which was in and around what i thought i'd get as i came back on a higher level than I left. So now at my yearly review I want to ask for more money, i've friends in similiar fields as myself with the same years experience who are earning more money than me. But i dont want to ask for something ridiculously high so that they'll think im ungrateful for the opportunity to get the job back. So anyway is there somewhere I could find out (roughly) what id be worth based on the industry and my experience. I know its a hard one. I know the other option would be to go to a competitor and interview and have them offer me a salary that i'd use as a negotiation factor but i really dont want to do that as i dont actually want to leave here and it seems a little sneaky. Id rather just ask for the amount that i think im worth and go from there. See how close they can meet it. Sorry for the longwinded-ness! Appreciate any comments/advice/website links!

The salary surveys on the jobsites are not particularly accurate IMO.

Would it be possible for you to post your position, qualifications, and how many people work for your employer?

About 2000 of us work in this company, its a billion dollar manufacturing company with a 'R&D' department of about 200 which i work in. Within that sector there are 3 levels of technicians (1,2 & 3) and then 4 levels of engineers....Engineer 1, Eng 2, Senior Eng, Principal Enginer (Manager level is the same as this). So since i came back from travelling im an engineer 2. I have a 1.1 honours degree in engineering.

Very difficult to get info so thanks for any help....

    OK -

    5 years experience
    First class honours degree
    Electronic engineer
Neither junior nor senior in the company
    Multi-national

    45k?

    /Just my guesstimate.

I would say a little lower than that, closer to the 40k mark.

If I were you I'd work out what a 5% increase would be and suggest that, since it's not too far off your previous increases and not OTT either.

Im actually not an electronic engineer, its a pharmacetical company i work with and i think they tend to pay higher. I'll do the percentage thing anyway, thanks for yer help.

Experienced Scientists/ Mech Engineers are in demand. Its a good occupation to be in as a lot of school leavers won't do science/ engineering courses at Uni/College meaning less competition for these jobs. As you are working in R&D you should be on 45-65k depending on exp

    Often wondered about this
According to finfacts I should be on 50-85k.
But it seems a bit unrealistic in my industry..
