    It was a name John assumed after getting off the island.

    okay strange question really to be honest....

    its the name Alias John Locke took when he got off the island.

    we dont know why he took this name or what he done for the 3 years when he got off the island or what he told the couple off ppls he met...

    but there is and episode upcoming called The Life And Times of Jeremy bentham so all will be revealed in that.

    The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham, episode 7, next week. I'd also doubt he'll be off the Island for 3 years, they were bouncing around in time after all, and Ben missed several months, if not longer, when he left the island too. Hopefully we'll find out what he says to all the characters he met, and why he killed himself, or was killed.
