Atlantic have a great selection of nest boxes this year, the hole is the perfect diameter for tits and its the right shape..only problem is that if you wish to have it for more than one season you need to rip off the roof to clean it out..surely the people who made these realised how stupid this is."hey lets sell bird nest boxes that can only be used once"??? WTF i got an open front one for black birds and robins which is perfect for me so i am happy.

I recently put a nesting box up in my garden, is there any way I can encourage birds to use it or will they just find it naturally. Might pop down to Atlantic to get another type.

I seem to remember that scattering a small amount of nesting material in the bottom of the box can encourage potential buyers. Make sure the box is fitted with the entrance hole facing away from the prevailing wind direction - i.e. face it east to reduce the chance of rain being driven into the box.

I quite fancy getting one of the high tech nestboxes from www.birdwatchireland.ie (€130.00) which includes a built in infra red camera and 30 metres of cable to connect into your TV - as advertised on the Mooney Programme last Friday.

    Attachment not found.

I put out a bee box and a bumble bee box. I need to put some material in the bumble bee box to make it comfy.

Place boxes 1.5 to 2 meters high facing North or North East. I find it better to keep the box empty as material in it can suggest another bird is using it. The size of the hole is important but I have had Blue Tits and Great tits use the same boxes in different years.
Leave the box alone and the birds should find it. Try to avoid constantly checking to see it it is being used.
It's a bit early yet so plenty of time for the birds to get used to the box before nesting comes around.

aldi have nest boxes for 8 quid (or they did at the weekend, anyway), which can be opened with a single screw at the bottom. they had both open fronted boxes, and boxes with one inch access holes.

Just got one of the open front ones, there is still plenty of both kinds there anyway.

Most garden birds (Tits, wrens etc) will usually start nesting in April but the box should be in place well before then to give potential occupants plenty of time to inspect - just like any first time buyer. :)
