Looking at buying a pair of grips. However I dont want to be spending a ton by buying heavier grips all the time.

Would a number 1 (140lbs) be too much for a beginner? I dont want to buy too low if you get me.

Other option is the sport 80lbs or the trainer 100lbs

If I started out again, I would get the John Brookfield one since it has extensions so one takes the place of several.

But I do have tubes I can stick on my HG grips to mimic the effect.

They are more expensive though. Mickk was getting generic ones in, dunno if they are in yet, they might not be on the site but in stock.

Dunno where the cheapest is to get the them.

Depends how strong you are, but I would start with the No.1 it will seem WAY too much at first, but you can train negatives and 2 hand techniques and build up to it. I use my HG200 just as warmups now, am almost closing the HG250 now. But the COC is harder, i.e. a HG200lb might equal a COC 140lb.

There are HG100 and HG150 too, at first I was pissed off I got the HG300 and not them, now I am pleased. I thought I would never budge the 300 but can now (a bit :o)

Appreciated man. Was happy with irishlifting the first time round, so will stick with them.
I will go with the number 1s, hopefully in a couple of years I might hear the click of the metal touching :)

Even when you can close it there are other tricks to try. The guy whos name is on the JB, John Brookfield came up with the idea of hanging weights on webbing and trapping it between a closed gripper, I have yet to try this, on sale here, but easily made yourself. http://www6.mailordercentral.com/ironmind/prodinfo.asp?number=1375

Also another idea was putting a metal hose clip on the gripper to tighten the spring. second on the list here http://www.angelfire.com/ny5/shenandoah/Grunt/Grip_1.html not sure about that one, it could damage the spring.

Haha, that last site. I wonder if he is a plumber.

I started with a #1 and #2 but I couldn't close the #1 for a couple of months. IIRC was deadlifting about 190 kg (double overhand) when i got the grippers.

If I were starting again I'd probably get the Trainer, #1 and #2. The #1 is not too hard but closing it is quite a specific task that requires some groove/practice

Many of my friends and colleagues have tried to close my #1, they've all failed. These people include relatively strong and fit people like rugby players, tradesmen etc. I would have thought a 16 stone carpenter would be able to mash the gripper pretty easily - but he wasn't.

Yeah, I had the HG300 in a mates house and most could not budge it, one guy had it closed a good bit, maybe a bit more than me. He is a mechanic and tiler who is very strong, dirty big arms but does no weight training. I have to give him a go of the 250 which I am about 5mm from closing (which is a long way to go!)

That is true, I have no doubt this guy could close it in a few months with practise. It is good to get the full ROM going, this is why negatives are good, and the JB gripper is easier to get negatives with. Once I closed the HG200 once I was soon lashing the reps out on it.

My mate who closed it most also could not manage a pullup and only a few chinups, I can do a fair few but still consider him far stronger than me. I help him move & lift stuff the odd time, he is very strong, but just untrained at other movements. On some other site it was saying some champion arm wrestlers could not close the COC 3, but if you can close it do not presume you are able to out arm wrestle them, or stronger in general.

I don't deadlift to 1RM, but estimate I could manage 150kg. I can do a single chinup with 50kg added, and have just started rope climbs with no feet to aid me which is probably the closest comparision thing I do compared to grippers.

I put those tubes on and they make a HUGE difference. If I had known it at the time I would have only bought the strongest or second strongest one. Hardware stores might have some tube, or a local scrap yard, mine fits really snuggly, if it was too wide it would turn easy and also it would touch each other too soon, not getting full ROM.

I got the COC trainer gripper a few years ago and could close it after a few weeks.

Sold it to someone on here and got the #1. Havn't closed it properly yet.... :)
