For everyone who just has to get it off their chest.

    First, things first: Orange skin.

I've not noticed that much orange skin.

Moan 1: The library never has the books I want.

Moan 2: Lack of brown scones in the College Bar.

    1) The college library should be opened for longer on a Saturday in the run up to exams
    2) They should run campbell catering out of the bialinn and get someone right in, whenever i've eaten in their every piece of food looks like its over saturated with water. Sometimes i think they just deep fat fry everything down to potatoes!!
    3) Has anyone walked in the tunnel under the concourse lately, i've walked there a few times recently and when i get near the end of it i feel like i'm breathing in toxic chemicals and i find it hard to breathe
    4) The price of membership for the new gym pisses me off, it should be at least the same price as we paid for the crunch gym seen as we are paying for half of it!
    5) car parks are a mess! My idea would be to build a massive car park out past corrib village! Then the college should build a bike shed and get loads of bikes. Then rent the bikes out to each student every year for a nominal fee. This way there would be less cars flyin around college and people could get around faster!
Certainly if they're going ahead with these plans for a 400 million euro campus of the future they should first have to deal with the parking facilities or lack of them!
    6) exams in the racecourse, its a windy hole of a place and on a sunny day you could get an awful bad glare of the sun!

The car parks are a joke. Could they not put down a bit of tarmac and paint a few lines on those gravel car parks?! The potholes (or should I say shallow graves!) are unreal in the gravel car parks. Also, I got blocked in by some idiot once in one of the gravel carparks - obviously a lot of this was down to that persons stupidity, but it was also partly down to the fact that the spaces are painted out and there are no double lines or yellow boxes.

I don't know how they got planning permission for some of the newer buildings on campus when they made no provisions for parking.

MY brother was telling me that they have parking out past corrib village and a shuttle bus into the college.
Only down side is that the first bus is a 2pm.....

    Totally pointless.

And what is with the clampers these days? There aren't enough spaces for every student and instead of being lenient they are just clamping everything in sight

I can't stand people going on bebo/facebook/myspace/whatever other online social networks are put there, on college computers. Specifically in the library. Limited number of spaces and you're just taking your sweet time looking over X number of profiles some of which belong to people you don't even know.

That whole exams away from college policy písses me off.
I can understand it for large classes, but all mine are TINY.
And yet i got shipped out to Mervue at Christmas

That monument thing in the tennis court...wtf? Did they just manage to forget about the whole parking problem or what?
Also +1 to the retarded library only being open to 17:30 on weekends.

It's annoying when you're in one of the computer suites and someone comes in and sits down beside you with their mp3 on full blast with the whole room being able to hear.

Guy beside me is currently listening to 'Lady GaGa - Just Dance'. Oh well, at least it's a decent song!

They can't put down tarmac or paint lines in the gravel car parks because they were denied planning permission a few years back to build a car park. So that's their way going around it. The City Council felt that NUIG were just pouring tarmac over all the colleges green areas so they put a halt to it.
Car parking is a joke though, I don't know how the university is continuously allowed to expand with minimal car parks.

The Bialinn and their pricing. What is it, a high street cafe or a college one? The main course food itself is mostly reasonable but everything else....is a joke. Got some take away salad in there, in a takeaway container, and she actually goes off to get a plate, and then weights the salad, in its takeaway container, on the plate! Ridiculous...

Didn't know that, thanks. Could never understand why they were leaving them in such an aweful state but that explains it.

Its going to be like the great gold rush in America trying to get a car space in N.U.I.G once they start building the new Engineering building! Thats going to knock out the main student car park!:(

When are they going to start on building that?

I've heard April! Its going to be pretty soon because its meant to be finished by 2010 and its massive! I think its about 14000 sq meters of space when you add up all the floors!
More information about the new building can be got here:
    http://www.nuigalway.ie/civileng/New_Building.html
Doesn't give a start date though!

I hear ya! As an Engineer i feel happy on the one hand that we will finally be getting the facilities we need instead of carrying out our work in an old run down cold mill!
On the other hand as a commuter i know how hard getting space is! Most mornings i end up down the end of corrib village although thats partly due to the fact that i have trouble rising early!!
I heard a rumour recently that they have to make provisions for parking before they start work on it! but any new car parks i'd say will be out past corrib village!

Parking will be up in Dangan and there will be a shuttle service from there into college. That is what I've heard anyway.

Further Moan: Why on earth is everything so expensive on campus!? Friends in Universities abroad weaving tales of how their colleges cater FOR the students with cheaper pricing ..makes me so angry I coud spit!

I know its been said over and over but I'm getting reallt frustrated!

    - People who park and then stay in there car, for over an hour!!!! very strange
    - Non NUIG'ers - I've a friend who got a parking permit for her dad and boyfriend... both of whom work in town.... Using the tennis courts...!
    - People not tightening up, especially in the gravel pit, counted 7 new spots that could have been created if people squished up....
    - Small cars taking up TWO spaces!
    - Waiting for a space and someone steals it from you... Or two become available at same time.....

    Grrrr... Rant over... For now!

You can't really blame people for this. They majority of drivers are bad enough trying to park in marked spaces and the gravel car park has none.

Also the gravel car park bends too so parking is a little messed up where it bends.

    Parking is a disgrace,
Bialann is supposed to be subsidized by our student fees adn yet every year the food gets worse, and more expensive. Last year around March I remember going in their on two consecutive days and the plates had actually gotten smaller, when i was in first year three years ago too, they used to at least slap up a half decent meal on the 'good food' counter but now it's the same standard slop day in, day out.
Also College bar, put up the prices yet again, and the carvery is definitely not worth €7.00 for any of their meals, and what's with them not providing chips???
One more thing! The new library/nurses building/whatever, as someone who studies in the reading room, why the hell did the college admin decide to wait till the first week of September to start building it, when they had the whole of Summer to do whatever they liked! Now it's looking like studying for the Summer exams is going to involve all the construction outside again whereas they could have been finishing up the heavy wok by now!
    Rant over!

They encountered a problem when they started digging for the foundations afaik. That delayed construcion until September.

I heard from the SU last year (think it was the then president, James Hope?) that the Galway City Council are the ones causing the desperate parking problems. Primarily, I believe, because they think adding more parking would cause even more gridlock on the approaches to the uni. When you think that you've the Quinncentenial (a carpark), Newcastle Road and University Road as the three approaches, it has some merit. That said, the gravel car park is a joke. They really need to tar it and add lines.

The catering is ridiculously expensive. I used to get food from the College Bar carvery quite a bit last year - primarily cos they gave big portions! I went in this year and got given three scoops of mash (before you'd get 5). I asked for another and they said it now costs 50c extra per scoop... I mean, come on... It's already nearly €8. I'd rather support the SU than give the money to Campbells, but the prices are stupidly high... Even in Smokey's which I go to quite a bit.

Edit: Oh, as a former Engineering student, I can feel for those stuck in Nuns Island. The Eng building was originally to have been done in about 2005/2006, but still isn't there. The sooner the better for the Engineers! With regard to the gym, I agree totally with the above. It was discussed at the SU class reps last year that the cost to students was going to be ~ €40 for the year, but that never materialised. The discussion at the time was whether to make it mandatory for all students as part of the registration cost or to make it voluntary. What is it now? €250!?

    1. Students complaining about parking! Galway's a small city - you can definately get around quicker on a bike!
    2. People on Bebo when there's a queue of people waiting to use computers to do real work.
    3. Kingfisher being allowed to run the college gym.
    4. Membership fee for Kingfisher.
    5. Having to pay registration fees, to pay clubs, to pay kingfisher, to be allowed to use the sports center that students have paid for!
    6. The quality of care in the Health Unit, I've been misdiagnosed so many times in there it's not funny.
    7. That sculpture still being on the tennis court. Don't mind it at all for Muscailt but it's been weeeeks now. Someone posted there about it being potential car-parking space too... NO! There used to be 4 courts along there, now only 1 remains, maybe the sculpture is a sneaky way to make the transition to a car-park...
    8. Having to pay to print off stuff that is required for your course.
    9. The quality and price of food across the campus.
    10. The college bar not being cheaper than any other bar in town. Not a fan of the place anyway but I always thought pre-college that college bars were meant to be cheap.
    11. The "I'm superior now go away" attitude of lecturers towards students.

Oh and one more thing - the college sub-contracting out all it's services now!!

    Kingfisher is a prime example.
    All the catering outlets.
Security is now run by some external company.
So's the computer/website stuff for clubs and societies.

If these services can be run by these people for a profit.... why can't the college employ people themselves to do it for cost-price and either use the extra cash to improve services or reduce registration fees.

Just to note, many people live well outside the range of bus routes and the range in which a bike would be acceptable, though I know there are lots of people who live within a 5/10 ,minute bike rides distance, I guess it's these people causing a lot of congestion when a bike would be a handy alternative but then who's to say who's allowed drive etc!

Ya i live 10 miles outside galway where i had no choice to get a car and commute as the bus service stopped going out at 5:30pm and thats no good for my course!
My only alternative was to move in and rent! It made more financial sense to get a car!
Not everyone that goes to nuig is from outside of county galway and lives in town you know:P
