Waltons! What are you doing!!!

Had a stroll in town today and noticed that Waltons was the only guitar store that was open and thought fair deuce to them for putting in a few Sunday hours and trying to make a few quid in these tough times.

They seemed to be doing a roaring trade. Place was packed and alot of over the counter activity. Anyways as some of you may have seen on another thread, I have been toying with the notion of getting a 335 alike and decided to give an Epiphone a go.

The guy was keen enough when I asked him for the guitar and he put me in one of the booths and plugged me in and left me to it........ for about 12 seconds.

No sooner had I strummed a bit, another salesman comes in and says "Come on now I have to move you on" I politely told him that I had just sat down and things got akward for a sec when he didnt leave. It was then I noticed he had a guy behind him with a Standard Les Paul waiting to plug in.

Anyway I made his mind up for him and closed the door and strummed away but felt really self conscious the whole time and ended up leaving after a short period.

What I could not believe was that here I am, willing to part with money for this guitar today and I am being shunted for someone who may or may not be buying a big ticket item. Not only did I think this was badly handled but I thought they were takin a big chance. Spoke to a guy at the counter as I was leaving about prices etc but truthfully I dont think I'll be buying from them.

never mad about waltons but always thought it was a nice enough shop
but i purchased a certain item there for €425 and was happy with it, service was good and got to give it a nice test drive.

i was at home in drogheda and saw the same item in the sound shop with a sticker for €350, i asked at the counter what the price of the item was, the fella said €350, i said "hmmm right" and he said it would be €300 if i was paying cash....

and so i said i'd never go to waltons again...
went to music maker on excheqer street from then on.

    I really hate waltons.
I went in once to try out a tele, so with a good guitar you think they'de let you play it through a nice amp right?
No... Some piece of crap BROKEN crate. No matter how nice the guitar felt and i knew should of sounded, it was just really horrible.

Went in after that to buy a pack of strings, got a funny look when i asked for low gauges.

And once more, i walked in with two of my mates, all of us had our skateboards in our hards, chatting amoung ourselves. I went to pick up a guitar to try it out, and wouldn't ya just know you.

    "OIY! YOU LOT, YOU'RE BARRED!"
I asked why, i didn't an answer, but i tell ya, he got a bloody great reply from me after that.

Worst music shop in Dublin or maybe even Ireland IMO.
    Over priced too.

I dont like Waltons myself, and would never buy from them, but they must be doing something right if they can afford to expand their premises in Sth Gt Georges St.

I must admit though, that anytime I went in for an idle browse, there were numerous teenagers trying out guitars to their hearts content (pianos too).

Look if you know what you want and your not interested in trying out for 2 hours then there is nothing wrong with the place. I offered to take a bass rig based on internet prices and they said yes.

I'm surprised that anyones surprised by what happens in there.

I dunno asshat teens who just seem to come in and play stairway must be pretty bloody fustrating for staff...............

I went in to Waltons just before Xmas, looking for a mandolin, not a single one was even close to being in tune, the staff were seriously unhelpful etcetc. Also a weird number of were broken.

Queue me walking into Perfect Pitch and putting down a deposit immediately afterwards.

Waltons is an awful, awful place. Horribly overpriced. Twice I've gone in there and been quoted prices more than €100 over what I got from other shops in Dublin. X-Music (and previously, Musician) ftw.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,817 ✭✭✭✭Dord

A lot of Waltons bashing here, and too right in most cases. BUT, they have two shops and they're not made equal. The other shop just up past O'Connell st. is actually pretty good. Prices aside... you can actually try out stuff there in peace (that's not in pieces :D). The staff are ok too. :)

Anyone ever notice how they've removed the drum throne and sticks from the big expensive electric drum kit? They've a ridiculous customer "trying out the product" ethic.. I actually was interested in buying such a kit!!

They went through a period where they never had any left handed instruments to try in there. I promised myself they'd never get any trade from me after that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,721 ✭✭✭✭CianRyan

I really hope someone from waltons stumbles upon this.

Better yet, i'll be in town tomorrow, i'll go in and tell that fat arsehole that shouted at me to go look it up. :p

Worth mentioning to him that all views exspressed are those of the users of boards.ie and not those of the website.
Don't wanna see this site going down.

Or better yet, maybe i should just keep my mouth shut and hope they see it themselves.

No offence to them, but they are a pack of fools. Most of them anyway. They have no respect for you unless you actually have the cash with you.

Look if you know what you want and your not interested in trying out for 2 hours then there is nothing wrong with the place.

In fairness I used to work in a guitar store (dont ask, I wont tell:p) and there is a big diff between someone plugging in a guitar for 5 mins and someone claiming squatters rights. In this instance however I had literally seconds with the axe before the 'move along sir' moment.

I would like to say though that there are some pretty choice comments about the place here and thats a shame because I bought a Les Paul off them in 95 and they couldnt have been more helpful. Completely different staff now though I guess. Also I would like to stress that Salesman 1 was grand, but salesman 2 seemed to make what I would consider to be a flawed judgement call. But yeah they are a bit dear all the same.

Yeah they're a right bunch of cabbages, as are Music Maker.

They should realise that the only thing that gives them any chance of competing with internet dealers these days is customer service.

XMusic are the way forward in my book. I wanted to try out an amp they didn't have on display with a specific guitar they had displayed, sales guy runs downstairs and finds the amp, sets it up in a beautiful soundproofed room and gave me a quick run through the features. I said I'd like to play it with a certain (high end) guitar which was similar to my own, and instead of getting the Waltons/Music Maker big deal about getting out the step ladder he told me to just go out and take it off the wall.

Left there for a good 45 mins playing with it, I'd say I could've been there an hour longer if I'd wanted! Quality service, and the amp price was E100 cheaper than Thomann!!

I really hope they make it, they're putting the rest to shame. Pity about the website though!

They also have rolad, laney, fender, marshall and last I heard are looking at getting more.

It would be great if they could get GK gear, according to a shop here in Cork, there isnt a GK dealership in Ireland, and going by Xmusic prices it would be great if they could quote me less than 800 for a GK 410 RBH
