Rip-Off Dublin

Hi, I was down in Dublin on Wednesday and Thursday for the Georgia match. First of all ticket prices, 50e for general admission, rip-off or what, no wonder there were a lot of empty seats in Croker!

I got a good hotel deal, £65.00 for return train from Belfast and one nights bed and breakfast in the Academy, not bad! Before and after the match we had drinks in Barrys Hotel, 3.70e for pints of Smithwicks, I think other pints were the same price, very reasonable for Dublin. So you Dubliners who are feeling the pinch, why pay 5-6e for drinks when you can go there. Afterwards we headed down to Temple Bar to Gogartys for some live music, 6.10e for pints and 6.50e for a small bottle of Corona (at home this would cost at most £3.30). I nearly had a heart attack, lol. No wonder the place at best was only half full, before it used to be always packed with tourists, BRING DOWN THE PRICES!

On Thursday I had a four course lunch again in Temple Bar for 22.50e, which was a bargain! I remember having a similiar lunch in the same restaurant last year and it cost me 42 euros.

The only reason I go to Dublin is for football. I managed to get a couple of good bargains, but on the whole I found the city to be very pricey. Many people from here in Belfast wouldn't dream of going there because it is so expensive, and unfortunatley not value for money.

I take it you PAID that price, which is why they charge it, becuase people DO pay it

the prices were displayed at the entrance, there's hardly a shortage of pubs in and around the temple bar area, so you could have easily "shopped around" for better prices

I was only down for one night. I wanted to go somewhere busy with live music and the only place I know is Gogartys. Is there anywhere else similiar to there but cheaper?

Fair play to you for pointing out the bargains too. The thread title is a little misleading.

Well there's your problem, only tourists, fools or pissheads drink there. Any self respecting local avoids that area at all costs due to the prices. Almost everywhere else in Dublin is cheaper so you can' really call the thread ripoff Dublin.

i was in amsterdam recently and a pint of heineken was widely €7 in the main tourist area of the city:eek:

in tourist areas, bars charge whatever they like cos there will always the punters coming through the door who are on holidays and will only be there for one night and they will pay whatever they are charged. im not defending the pubs, i think the prices are madness but im just making the point that its not only dublin/ireland thats guilty..

I have to disagree with you there. I was in Belfast for the weekend and was in a couple of city centre bars. Bottles of beer were only about 3 pound and I was drinking cocktails for 4.50 to 5.00 pound (not happy hour either). We also had a three course meal for two with a bottle of wine and 2 beers for 70 pound in one of the citys top seafood restaurants. It was the freshest seafood I have had in a long time. The city was full of tourists particularly southeners but the city bars and restaurants don't feel the need to rip off their customers!

I was in Croke Park the Saturday before the Ireland vs France rugby match. Seated tickets were E90 and standing were E38. I absolutely point blank refused to pay E90 and settled for standing on the Hill (where I got a great view). And the place was full to the brim.
