My boyfriend and I are thinking of taking a trip to Croatia the 1st 2 weeks of September. We want to spend some time in Dubrovnik as well as do some island hopping. I have a few queries…

Are we better off pre-booking the whole thing with Croatia Tours or should we DIY it? I know it would probably work out more expensive to pre-book but we want a hassle free holiday

We want a few days to totally relax preferably near a nice beach. Where’s the best place for this?

Just a couple of pointers, most beaches around Dubrovnik are stone shingle and not sand. Weather along Dalmatian coast quickly turns from summer to winter at the end of September so if you can go early in the month.

I was in Croatia (Dubrovnik) in 2006, booked fairly late through a package. We're going back this year one week in Montenegro and one week in Dubrovnik. Originally we had planned to book this DIY but after checking out the price of flights and hotel rates, it was much cheaper to book again through a package.

Overall I suppose it depends where exactly you want to go as you'll find it hard to get a cheap flight to Dubrovnik but you might have more luck flying cheap to one of the other cities.

Croatia Tours had a sale on recently when we booked, not sure if it's still going.

Absolutely loved Dubrovnik by the way!

Thanks for the responses. I think I'd prefer a package holiday but unfortunately they only seem to fly Saturdays and I have to attend a wedding on Sat Aug 29th so I was hoping to fly out on the 31st and return on the 12th. Accomodation seems expensive enough when you DIY it but I'd prefer more than a 2 centre holiday may a 3 or 4 centre one!

    DIY it.
we went about 5 years ago and basically I searched the net for guesthouses in Dubrovnik. Ended up in this huge house in the old town for cheaper than a hotel. The family moved out for a few weeks ontheir own holiday and bascially let the place.

If you're travelling around (we travelled up the coast) just arrive in a place without booking.there's usually people at the pier/bus stop waiting to offer you a place to rent and the few places we got were fine.

    Defo DIY it.
    Beautiful country too!

    bon voyage

i've been to croatia loads and my advise would not to use croatia tours. if you dont fancy taking the risks of DIY but want DIY then you'd be best speak with nika travel (google nika travel croatia). I'm spending lots of time in croatia cos i have good friends in zagreb and i spend every summer there. i first went to croatia with them a few years ago with nika travel and fell in love with zagreb. theres so much going on there winter and summer, its gots GREAT vibrations loads of concerts, great clubs, openminded people lots of cultural events, its a really city with soul, u have to love it!. nika travel knows every corner of croatia and are full of advice, helped us book with private owners on islands and can even suggest places to go. if thats not enough to make you give them a call they are also arranging my wedding for march. we're having it in Zagreb and our honeymoon somewhere on the coast (i can't say cos its a surprise for my fiancé even tho he's too dumb to be use a computer :-). they're doing an excellent job and i can't recommend them enough.
