I've seen some bad covers but this is up there with the best of them -

She should be charged for murder imo. Disgraceful.

It's horrendous - she also did a ghastly cover of A Whiter Shade of Pale.

    That is pretty bad alright.
It's a shame, because she does have a nice voice but that cover really doesnt work.

A shame for all concerned because it's not like Shining Light is vintage Ash.

That was an utterly terrible cover! What is she thinking of by releasing it as a single?

Maybe she's attempting to "get down" with the kids? It reminds of a few years back when Joe Dolan covered Blur's "The Universal"
(YouTube unfortunately doesn't appear have that particular video ;))

I suppose that must be it. If she's trying to sell a few singles why doesn't she get track down Dave Stewart and do something under the Eurythmics name?

*shudder* I am glad I've never seen or heard that one!

That's true. Uncle Pat or Jack Names The Planets would rank amongst their more aged numbers. Definitely not Shining Light.

Just like the mid-life crisis with some blokes, I guess the menopause makes some women do strange, inadvisable things!

Annie should try covering Prince instead. Murder his songs. :D

I do respect and admire Annie Lennox, though. She comes across as a very balanced, sincere person. She's also a talented musician. If I remember right, her work as part of the Eurythmics and her own solo work sing sweetly to the tune of selling about 80 million records. So, a fair few people out there like what she has already done.

Anyway, given that she has covered Shining Light, that's plainly demonstrative of her being granted Tim Wheeler's seal of approval. I'd say he didn't give a damn how the end result sounded as: 1) He was so flattered that Annie Lennox was interested in covering one of his songs, and, 2) Her cover would renew interest in the Ash catalogue- obviously a great thing for them.

    I forgive Annie. :)

what happened to Ash anyway. They said they weren't going to release any more albums and were going to just do download singles. That was several years ago and they haven't release squat since - come on guys, how long does it take to record a single?

Well, 'Twilight Of The Innocents' was released approx. a year ago and was mostly available on download. I remember them releasing at least two songs as singles from that. I've forgotten the song names, so clearly they didn't impress upon me in any indelible way! Anyway, I think Irish radio is murder for failing to give Ash airplay- I rarely hear their songs, either on the mainstream shows or on the 'alternative' shows (Cormac Battle, I'm looking at you, ya b@stard!).

Otherwise, they've just been gigging a bit, and they released a special, limited edition version of '1977' on download a few months ago. They did some shows in London to coincide with that special re-release.

I miss their songs, TBH. I think they've kind of lost their musical mojo in the last four/five years. IMO, 'Evil Eye' was their last decent single- and that was in 2004, for Jesus sake!

'Free All Angels' still ranks amongst my favourite rock albums. It might be fairly lightweight rock but, personally, I find that it's one of those albums where I can listen happily to every song on it boredom or discomfort-free.

I actually think they turned into a troupe of blind men waltzing in the dark following lead guitarist's Charlotte Hatherly's departure- she seemed to be a positive creative catalyst to the band's sound and direction; probably more than she's even credited for, although Ash are inherently a good band nonetheless.

Anyway, this discussion is probably for another thread, LOL. Sorry. :o

ok "several years ago" turns out to be an exaggeration. The last album was in July 07 which was when they made their "singles only from now on" declaration. Still, the implication was that it would allow them to release stuff more frequently.
