Post coital coil

ok. they closed my other thread about emergency contraception (thanks guys, really helpful) so i'm starting this one because, yes i haven't gone to the doctor yet, 70+ euro is not something i can afford to take lightly right now, nor is just going to the doctor for a "consultation" to just to ask about this and i want to make sure i'm making the best decision about what i need.

so the well woman center does a procedure called "the post-coital coil", but the website doesn't give any information about this, and i haven't been able to find anything definite online - but what i want to know is if its the same as the regular copper coil, as in, is it possible to keep it in for the 5+ years u can keep the copper coil? i can't tell because on their site their pricing is like this:
    Intrauterine Contraceptive Device (Copper)

    Initial consultation: €50.00
    IUCD Fitting and Device: €180.00
6-week follow up visit: Free of charge
    IUCD removal: €50.00

    Post-coital coil: €100.00
    Student post-coital coil: €90.00

if it was the same then why is there no "initial consultation" needed?
i've been wanting to get the copper coil anyway, and shrewd as i am, i see that this could be an opportunity for me to get it at a hugely reduced rate?

does anyone have any experience with "post coital coils"?
again, i'm going to reiterate this: a simple "go ask your doctor" is not the solution to this problem (besides the fact its now after 5pm), i don't want to go to the well woman center just to ask about this and find out its not what i want, and then have to pay a consultation fee for nothing, as my doctor would be cheaper for me to get the morning after pill from. but i don't want to go to my doctor and ask her about the post-coital coil because i know she doesn't do the procedure and if it is what i'm looking for then i'll have to go to the well woman center anyways...

It was closed because we can't give medical advice here. It was closed because the correct response to that thread was "go to your doctor". 70 euro may be a stretch for you, but as another poster pointed out a child will be a much bigger stretch financially and the clock is ticking so to speak. This thread I'll open as it's more to do with the economics of it, but for all other posters, stick to non medical advice or it'll get closed again.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

OP - from an economic viewpoint, why dont you get your sexual partner to stump up some of the money to go to a doctor for (a) morning after pill and (b) consultation about best type of contraception going forward?

Im sure if offered the choice of paying for a doctor now or supporting a child for the next 18 years he will choose to pay for a doctor now.

Other than that, its extremely irresponsible of you to have unprotected sex when you cant afford to deal with the consequences.

Why dont you phone the Well Woman and ask these questions over the phone?

Youre being kinda lazy about getting information, if you google 'post coital coil' there is a wealth of info out there.

Try this article - the very last piece will be of interest to you.

ok, thanks for taking the time to reply. i have obviously been googling this all day, and i've done a huge amount of research about the coil already, because like i said, i've been thinking about getting it anyway. contraception isn't something i take lightly these days after having been on the pill for years and having really terrible reactions when going off it. i've been googling in circles about this for hours and haven't come up with any answers, which is why i posted here, to see if anyone had any experience with the "post coital coil" from the well woman center.

asking my partner for money isn't really an option right now, as its pretty complicated and we don't know each other well yet (its very early days - as in the first day, but i think there is going to be a lot more days to come, if you know what i mean?). i think bringing up the subject of "hey guy, i know we've only been together one night, and you know, we're meeting up at the weekend too to see how it goes, but anyways, i thought now would be a great time for me to ask you to pay for the coil i just had inserted and for some money towards the doctors consultation. its expensive but it means we won't have to worry about pregnancy for up to 5 years! .... wait? why are you running away?"

Obviously i know its all irresponsible and i'm not here for advice on how to be smarter and make better decisions when i'm drunk and lustful.

and its true i'm being kind of lazy about it, i run my own business and its a very demanding time right now, i don't have a ton of mental energy to give to this as for some reason it feels less serious than not meeting my deadline tomorrow.

Busy now, eh? Imagine how busy you're going to be in 9 months when you have a newborn to take care of.

Seriously, OP... you're wasting valuable time. The MAP's effectivity is a lot less than 100%, and i's optimum time to be taken is within 12 hours. So every hour that passes, your chances of getting pregnant increase - EVEN if you take the MAP.

The coil is not emergency contraception. No decent doctor will give you ANY sort of long-term contraception if there's a chance you could be pregnant - and there is a chance you are pregnant. Having the coil inserted now may not prevent you getting pregnant, and it could cause you to have serious medical problems like an ectopic pregnancy.

Go get the MAP. The doctor won't even give you the coil unless you lie to him and tell him there's no chance you could be pregnant, and you're taking a huge risk as well as that.

Go to the doctor, as soon as possible.

    Hi
the coil/copper IUD IS a form of emergency contraception which can be effective up to 5 days after unprotected sex.

    wikipedia says:
An alternative to emergency contraceptive pills is the copper-T intrauterine device (IUD) which can be used up to 5 days after unprotected intercourse to prevent pregnancy. Insertion of an IUD is more effective than use of Emergency Contraceptive Pills - pregnancy rates when used as emergency contraception are the same as with normal IUD use. IUDs may be left in place following the subsequent menstruation to provide ongoing contraception (3–10 years depending upon type).

i'm looking for advice about the coil, not about when to take the morning after pill.

    h the national pregnancy counselling helpline, 1850 49 50 51

Yes it is the same as the regular copper coil.

taken from the www.ifpa.ie fact sheet on emergency contraception.
METHOD 2: THE COPPER INTRAUTERINE DEVICE

    WHAT’S INVOLVED?
A doctor fits a copper intrauterine device (IUCD) in your womb up to
five days after you had unprotected sex. If you need to come back to
have the IUCD fitted, you may be advised to take emergency pills in
    the meantime

    HOW DOES THE IUCD WORK?
It may stop an egg being fertilised or implanting in your womb.

HOW EFFECTIVE AS EMERGENCY CONTRACEPTION IS THE IUCD?
The IUCD is the most effective method of emergency contraception. It
will prevent more than 9 out of 10 (98%) pregnancies expected to
occur if no emergency contraception had been used. It can also
provide ongoing contraception if you want to use this method
CAN ANYONE USE AN IUD FOR EMERGENCY CONTRACEPTION?
Most women can use an IUCD for emergency contraception.

AN IUCD MAY BE SUITABLE IF YOU:
» Want to use the most effective method of emergency contraception
» Are too late to take emergency pills
(over 72 hours after unprotected sex)
» Do not want to, or cannot, take progestogen
» Want to use the IUCD as an ongoing method of contraception

If is a lot more invasive then the emergency contraceptive piil,
and it may not be suited to you.

Ring and make an appointment to see a dr asap to discussion your options.
I don't think you are being shrewd at all, what I do think I can't say.

Please stop googling and ring the help line and make an appointment and
don't forget if you have been exposed enough to need emergency contraception
you have been possibly to exposed to a range of STI and HIV so you
should considered getting your self tested for them.
