Sky Called to the door..

..apparently the digital switchover is coming and I won't be able to use my aerial any longer as the analogue signals will not be broadcast. I'll have to subscribe to Sky to get digital television, especially RTE & TV3.

She was very lucky that I was in a good mood.. but the poor girl was speechless to know that I am already receiving free digital satellite television from the UK & Germany and that right now I can receive free digital services from Three-Rock.

"But how does that work over an aerial?" .. "Why didn't they tell me this?".. well I gave her that answer.. "because they want you to go find people to sign up for Sky thinking that they have no other choice".. "which is a very very wrong thing for Sky to be doing."

I would ring sky and complain but I'd probably be made listen to a sweet talking Scot for an hour as she tried to find out why Sky did this and all along trying to coax me into signing up again.

Thanks. You have just reminded me to cancel Sky. I keep forgetting.

Maybe complaint should be lodged with ComReg or /and The Consumers' Association of Ireland

God almightly!! Sure analogue wont be turned off here until 2012 at the earliest anyway!

Its a pity, though that most people she would have been calling to would have had no idea about DTT and fell for this sh*t

This shows that Comreg really need to start an advertising campaign about DTT.

Now now Zonda, are you forgetting what country you live in????? Comreg to notify the people about the 3 year transition to DTT, what they need to do, what equipment they might need, choices etc......? Now that would be a SENSIBLE approach to the situation but this is the country where we had a Financial Regulator who hadn't a clue about the messing going on in the banks, so why would the Communications Regulator be any better?.

Have to have a grudging respect for Sky and their scare tactics. Hell, they'll probably get a few thousand new customers who'll believe their bs. Meanwhile, I'm the proud owner of a new Freesat set up and now that its paid for, I've got free tv. :D

When we switched to Km/Hr speedos in cars, they were still selling cars with MPH speedos in May after the changeover. It should have been a requirement that the speedos were installed at least a year ahead.
The number of times I've asked about DTT in TV shops, to be told 'What's that ... Don't know about that... Yes all our TVs are HD ready ... etc. etc.'
Sony, Philips, Peats, DID, etc etc. Maybe I just got the ignorant ones!

As the head of General Motors said in the seventies, 'If we made boats, a lot of people would have drowned.'

DTT is the digital version of what you get over the aerial from RTE already, but with more channels.
It'll be like Sky, but with fewer channels, and somwhat more free.

*- May not be completely accurate, but that's what I've managed to pick up without investigating too much

I would think FTA satellite from Astra 1 and 2 for the German and UK television. RTÉ from Three Rock through the DTT.

I know lying isnt acceptable but some of what she said is true and im sure she was new and should of asked wether you were interested or not...

Being new at your job is no excuse for mis selling and everything you say about a product must be true not just some of it.

So getting nervous or panicked makes you say things about a product that are not true? Give me a break she was mis selling, simple as.

No kidding? I thought that was obvious form the the way I added "in ireland" in capital letters to the end of your "sky don't sell FTA" comment.

Who's arguing? I called you on your careless and inaccurate comment so people don't go away thinking it's true, end of story.

ok danny. so the girl didn't get told everything about the product. not her fault but someone is being naughty and the girl is one in front of you. i'm sure we would all be gentlemen and fill her in on the slight untruth she was peddling and she could pull the head off her boss when she got back.

I wonder was this sales woman connected to an another so called SKY rep who called to an Elderly couple near Carnew co Wicklow. She came with the same story. At first she did not notice their Sky dish. When she was told that they had sky. she then said that their english aerial will switch off soon. she then added the English channels to other channels on their sky box and Charged €50.

Now that is wrong and should be reported to their team leader!

    What team leader????

Sky themselves don't have official sales reps calling Door to Door. The people calling themselves Sky reps are from contract sales companies This week they are selling Sky next week they are flogging Broadband maybe something else the week after. I come across a lot of customers who have signed up for sky with these so called Sky reps. When the problems start with the customers satellite signal or receiver 9 times out 10 the contact mobile number for the rep is out of use. Most of these so called reps don't even fill in the retailer number on the customers copy of the Sky contract so its very hard to find out who's the customers warranty is with.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,183 ✭✭✭dvpower

I also had one of these Sky salespeople call the other week. Went on about the digital changeover coming in the next few months and that everyone was going to have to change their service.

I don't know much about digital TV but I know nonsense when I see it. As it happens I was in the market for a Sky installation but when I made it clear to her that I wasn't going to sign up there and then, she made her excuses and left.

There independant retailers selling sky products for example Digital Direct etc. Each area has a team leader with thier own ASA or retailer number. Any advice i would give you is that if they dont have an ASA dont sign up as problems will arise.

Basically their team leader is the one who takes the contracts to process afterwards.

Oh and another thing Sky have changed their contracts now you dont have to sign them and there in sheet form and they dont have a A/C number on them we have to get that off sky when we process your account and then give it to you.

Their are lot more independant retailers selling sky products along with Digital direct a lot of the Sky kiosks in many shopping centres belong to independants. The point here is why don't the sales reps tell the people that they are sales reps for a sales company that is selling Sky products instead of give the people false impressions that they represant Sky digital. I Know what the new contract looks like I sell and install Sky.

Many of the Kiosks are paid by sky to operate so they are in a sence on behalf of sky.

I did not know that you did that...well you learn something new every day.

Its absolutely appalling that sky are allowing who speak on their behalf, to do this. I bet they would'nt do this in th uk. Over there, the presence of free digital tv by freeview and freesat has been well advertised and i doubt anyone over there would fall fro this bull****. I genuinely hope that DTT in this country causes a lot of people to dump sky. I think that because i imagine the reason a lot of people got sky in the first place was to get decent picture quality. Now that that excuse is gone, if you're payin 30E for sky a month, over the FTA channels, you're gettin a whole lot of extra channels, just a few music channels, some "comedy" channels and the documentaries. Not worth the 30E in the vast majority of cases, i would think

tbh i would like to take a flame thrower to all those annoying ba****ds that come to my door trying to sell me something when i am

    a. trying to eat my dinner
    b. trying to put my kids to bed
    c. trying to sit down and relax
    d. trying to control my urges to maim door to door salesmen

If I want to buy something I will go out and buy it, I don't need some muppet chapping my door annoying me - go out and get a real job ffs.

What these Sales companies/ Team leaders should do is give their sales reps a course on how to read a compass, Check for line of sight explain to the customer about cable entry and telephone connection. Instead of get your feet in the door, Talk with out taking a breathe, Get the money and get out. And leave the mess and grieve to the installers.
